Calcium electroporation in three cell lines: a comparison of bleomycin and calcium, calcium compounds, and pulsing conditions [PDF]

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2014
Electroporation with calcium (calcium electroporation) can induce ATP depletion-associated cellular death. In the clinical setting, the cytotoxic drug bleomycin is currently used with electroporation (electrochemotherapy) for palliative treatment of tumors.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Hierarchical shape-controlled mixed-valence calcium manganites for catalytic ozonation of aqueous phenolic compounds

open access: yes, 2016
Catalytic ozonation has attracted intensive attention due to its efficient degradation of various organic pollutants in water. The key to a practical application is the discovery of highly effective catalysts.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Comparative Efficacy of Montmorillonite, Calcium Hydroxide, Calcium Carbonate in pH Restoration of Acidified Freshwater Bodies

open access: yes, 2020
Freshwater acidification is the result of acid rain precipitating over a freshwater body. There are significant ecological consequences that result from such precipitation, as ecosystems surrounding freshwater bodies are destroyed because many of the ...

Light-driven nucleation, growth, and patterning of biorelevant crystals using resonant near-infrared laser heating

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Spatiotemporal control over crystal nucleation and growth is of fundamental interest for understanding how organisms assemble high-performance biominerals, and holds relevance for manufacturing of functional materials.
