Physico-chemical properties of nanocrystalline apatites: Implications for biominerals and biomaterials [PDF]
Nanocrystalline apatites play an important role in biomineralisation and they are used as bioactive biominerals for orthopaedic applications. One of the most interesting characteristics of the nanocrystals, evidenced by spectroscopic methods, is the ...

Recent progress in adhesion strength between calcium phosphate coatings and titanium implants
Calcium phosphate, due to its excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity, can be used as the implant coating to improve osseointegration. However, the calcium phosphate coating still faces problems such as exfoliating and insufficient adhesion strength ...

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Properties of magnetron hydroxyapatite coatings deposited on oxidized substrates [PDF]
Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating were formed on oxidized niobium surfaces by the highfrequency magnetron sputtering method using hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate targets.

Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Stimulation of calcium phosphate crystal formation by implant surfaces with electret properties [PDF]
Oxide coatings with electret properties are investigated. The possibility of stimulation of the formation of calcium phosphate sediments near the electroactive surface is discussed. The exposure of implants with such coatings to solutions imitating blood

Genetic Responses to Nanostructured Calcium-phosphate-coated Implants [PDF]
Nanostructured calcium phosphate (CaP) has been histologically and biomechanically proven to enhance osseointegration of implants; however, conventional techniques were not sufficiently sensitive to capture its biological effects fully. Here, we compared the conventional removal torque (RTQ) evaluation and gene expression in tissues around ...

CCDC80 suppresses high‐grade serous ovarian cancer migration via negative regulation of B7‐H3
PAX8 is a lineage‐specific master regulator of transcription in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) progression. We show for the first time that PAX8 facilitates proliferation and metastasis by repressing the cell autonomous tumor suppressor CCDC80 and inducing B7‐H3 expression.

Plasma-inspired biomaterials [PDF]
The first questions which arise when one looks at the title of this special issue are what are plasma-inspired biomaterials, and what is this Special Issue of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics (JPhysD) all about?
