Labour Market Segmentation Revisited: A Study of the Dutch Call Centre Sector

open access: yes
Employment in the call centre sector in the Netherlands, similar to the trend in other European countries, is expanding greatly. In 2001, Datamonitor (2002) estimated that 1,266 call centres were operating in the Netherlands.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Life in a Northern Town: Call Centres, Labour Markets and Identity in Post-Industrial Middlesbrough [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Since the late 1970s, many towns and cities across the UK have faced processes of deindustrialisation thoroughly transforming the social and cultural landscape for the local population.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.
