Calving processes and the dynamics of calving glaciers [PDF]

open access: possibleEarth-Science Reviews, 2007
Abstract Calving of icebergs is an important component of mass loss from the polar ice sheets and glaciers in many parts of the world. Calving rates can increase dramatically in response to increases in velocity and/or retreat of the glacier margin, with important implications for sea level change.

Salmonella in Calves

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 2009
Salmonellae are endemic on most large intensive farms and salmonellosis is a common cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Disease and mortality usually reflect a variety of management events and environmental stressors that contribute to compromised host immunity and increased pathogen exposure.

Cryptosporidiosis in calves

New Zealand Veterinary Journal, 1987
Abstract Extract Madam: — Faecal samples submitted by veterinarians to the Ruakura Animal Health Laboratory from young calves with diarrhoea are subjected to bacteriological and virological examinations. Known infectious agents causing neonatal diarrhoea, eg. E. coli, rotavirus, and coronavirus are frequently isolated.

Salmonellosis in Calves

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 1985
Despite the efforts of both physicians and veterinarians, the number of cases of salmonellosis per year has held steady or risen. The ability of the organism to live in many different animal species and under inhospitable environmental conditions is likely responsible for Salmonella's prevalence today.

Ventriculography in Calves

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1971
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Angiocardiographic anatomy of 7 young calves was similar to that described in man and other animals. In the lateral projection, the right ventricle occupied the cranioventral portion of the cardiac silhouette. Caudal and caudoventral borders of the right ventricle were roughened and irregular due to filling defects caused by ...

Calving and weaning performance of calves from heifers bred to easy calving sires

Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 1994
In a calving ease comparison involving 106 calves born to first calf heifers, calves sired by Red Angus bulls were heavier at birth and required more calving assistance than Corriente-sired calves. However, the easier calving Corriente-sired calves experienced equivalent death loss and were significantly lighter at 3, 5 and 7 mo of age.

Calving day and age at first calving in Angus heifers1

Journal of Animal Science, 2010
Because of difficulties in data collection and analysis, in most breeds there have been limited ways to evaluate fertility in females on a between-herd basis. The objective of this study was to determine the heritabilities (direct and maternal) for CD (calving day) and AFC (age at first calving) in American Angus heifers and to evaluate the potential ...

Cloned transgenic calves produced from nonquiescent fetal fibroblasts.

Science, 1998
An efficient system for genetic modification and large-scale cloning of cattle is of importance for agriculture, biotechnology, and human medicine. Here, actively dividing fetal fibroblasts were genetically modified with a marker gene, a clonal line was ...

Lipoplasty of the Calves and Ankles

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1990
The author details his experience over the past 6 years with 53 patients who had lipoplasty of the calves and ankles. The patient selection and diagnosis are critical. Determining whether the problem is localized or circumferential (generalized) influences the approach.

Salmonellosis in young calves

New Zealand Veterinary Journal, 1966
Abstract Extract In a comprehensive description of infections caused by Salmonella spp. in New Zealand livestock, it is mentioned that outbreaks of bovine salmonellosis have generally been confined to adult animals. The origin of these infections (Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella bovis morbificans predominantly) in most instances is obscure ...
