Biology of lung cancer

Seminars in Oncology Nursing, 1996
To provide a review of the biology of lung tumor development and progression, and advances in gene and antimetastatic therapies.Review articles, research studies, and book chapters pertaining to the biology of lung cancer.Advances in understanding the molecular basis of lung cancer initiation, promotion, and progression will provide more effective ...

Cancer Systems Biology

2010
Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease, not only at a genetic and biochemical level, but also at a tissue, organism, and population level. Multiple data streams, from reductionist biochemistry in vitro to high-throughput "-omics" from clinical material, have been generated with the hope that they encode useful information about phenotype and ...

Biology of ovarian cancer

Current Opinion in Oncology, 1997
Although ovarian carcinomas are thought to arise from the ovarian surface mesothelial layer, the possibility that they develop from müllerian remnants within paraovarian tissues merits further consideration. Molecular genetic studies suggest that ovarian cystadenomas, low malignant potential tumors, and carcinomas are not part of a disease continuum ...

Systems biology for cancer

Current Opinion in Oncology, 2005
Significant insight can be gained into complex biologic mechanisms of cancer via a combined computational and experimental systems biology approach. This review highlights some of the major systems biology efforts that were applied to cancer in the past year. Two main approaches to computational systems biology are discussed: mechanistic dynamical ...

Aging biology and cancer

Seminars in Oncology, 2004
Epidemiologic analyses of current registries indicate that the majority of patients in the United States with cancer are 65 years old or older. Basic research in both gerontology and oncology has led to an understanding that these processes (normal aging and the development of cancer) have much in common.

Biology of cancer and ageing

European Journal of Cancer, 2009
The ageing process is characterised by an increasing risk of death with advancing age. Ageing is thought to be caused by molecular damage that accumulates over the lifetime of an individual. Numerous agents can lead to persistent damage, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced as byproducts of cellular metabolism.

Lung cancer biology

Seminars in Radiation Oncology, 1991
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the Western world. In spite of major advances in understanding the staging and prognostic factors of lung cancer, advances in survival have been minimal over the past 20 years. For patients with non-small cell carcinoma, surgical resection offers the only chance of meaningful survival.

Biology of breast cancer

Current Opinion in Oncology, 1991
There are several established prognostic factors for women who have early breast cancer. These include extent of axillary lymph node involvement and tumor size, histology, and steroid receptor studies. Although clinically quite useful, these factors unfortunately are not perfect predictors of individual outcome.
