Six-phase Three-level Neutral Point Clamped Inverter for Capacitor Voltage Balancing and Common-Mode Voltage Cancellation

Applied Power Electronics Conference, 2021
In this paper, a six-phase three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed to achieve active capacitor voltage balancing as well as common-mode voltage (CMV) cancellation.

Voltage balancing using switched capacitors

Electric Power Systems Research, 1992
Thyristor switched capacitors (TSCs) are a useful means of load balancing and reactive power support. The control of a general load by a binary weighted switched capacitor system is discussed in this paper along with a simple control scheme where the capacitor bank across a line pair is adjusted to control the fundamental voltage magnitude for that ...

MMC Capacitor Voltage Decoupling and Balancing Controls

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2015
A Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) control system based on converter energy storage is proposed in this paper for two different control modes: active power and dc voltage. The proposed control system decouples the sub-module (SM) capacitor voltages from the dc bus voltage. One of the practical applications is the management of active redundant SMs. A

Boost Modular Multilevel Converter’s Capacitor Voltage Balancing without voltage sensors

2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics, Smart Grid and Renewable Energy (PESGRE2020), 2020
In this paper a cross connected half ridge sub-module (XCHB-SM) based modular multilevel converter (MMC) is presented. It is capable to block DC side fault which is not possible with normal HB-SM based MMC. MMC is also prominent for its superior Capacitor Voltage Balancing (CVB).

Capacitor Voltage Balancing Schemes in Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters

2007 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, 2007
This paper focuses on the development of capacitor voltage balancing methods in a flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI). Three such strategies have been described and have been applied to a five-level CMLI. The sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique has been used while making the proposals.

Simple direct capacitor voltage balancing of a flying capacitor converter

2005 European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, 2005
This paper proposes a new charge control method for voltage balancing of flying capacitor multilevel converters. Only the signs of the deviations from the nominal capacitor voltages and the sign of the output current are needed to choose proper switching states for charging or discharging the ...

Capacitor Voltage-Balancing Control for Flying-Capacitor MMC without Current Sensors

2020 IEEE 9th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference (IPEMC2020-ECCE Asia), 2020
This paper proposes a submodule (SM) capacitor voltage balancing control scheme for the flying-capacitor modular multilevel converter (FC-MMC), where current sensors are not used. From the SM capacitor voltages and the half-arm insertion index, the DC and AC circulating currents are estimated, instead of measurement.

Capacitor voltage balancing in modular multilevel converters

6th IET International Conference on Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD 2012), 2012
A universal capacitor voltage control method for converters built from series connected modules is presented. It fully exploits both the circulating currents and the common-mode voltage without affecting the phase current control. The controllability of the capacitor voltages in various such converters is investigated.

Natural capacitor voltage balancing for a flying capacitor converter induction motor drive

2008 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, 2008
This paper presents an analysis of the natural voltage balancing dynamics of a three phase flying capacitor converter when supplying an induction motor. The approach substitutes Double Fourier harmonic series for the PWM switching waveforms and the frequency response of the motor, to create a linear state space model of this type of load.
