Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

A Porphyromonas gingivalis Capsule-Conjugate Vaccine Protects From Experimental Oral Bone Loss

open access: yesFrontiers in Oral Health, 2021
Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory diseases of the periodontium that result in progressive destruction of the soft and hard tissues supporting the teeth, and it is the most common cause of tooth loss among adults.

The role of the Streptococcus pneumoniae capsule in interactions with complement and phagocytes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The Streptococcus pneumoniae capsule is an essential virulence factor and it is ideally situated to modulate interactions between the bacteria and host immune cells.

Probiotic‐Derived Vesicles Rectally Delivered via Thermo‐Gelling Copolymer Promote Mucosal Healing and Reduce Inflammation in Ulcerative Colitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A thermo‐responsive rectal delivery platform integrating probiotic‐derived extracellular vesicles within a hyaluronic acid‐based copolymer enables localized and sustained therapy for ulcerative colitis. The formulation effectively suppresses inflammation, promotes macrophage polarization toward a regenerative phenotype, restores epithelial barrier ...

Development and evaluation of a novel vaccine against prevalent invasive multi-drug resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2016
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a pathogen that causes serious invasive infections, such as septicemia, meningitis and pneumonia in addition to mild upper respiratory tract infections. Protection from pneumococcal diseases is thought to be mediated mainly by

One‐Step Immobilized Phage Depolymerase Coatings for Catheter‐Related Bloodstream Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Catheter‐related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) caused by drug‐resistant Gram‐negative bacteria remain a major clinical challenge. Here, a polydopamine‐assisted depolymerase coating degrades bacterial capsules and restores serum‐mediated killing, effectively suppressing biofilms and reducing bacterial burden in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo, presenting a

Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 33H: a novel serotype with frameshift mutations in the acetyltransferase gene wciG

open access: yesPneumonia
Background Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia. Pneumococci are categorised into serotypes, based on the type of capsular polysaccharide produced, which has important implications for virulence ...

Capsular Polysaccharide From Bacteroides fragilis Protects Against Ulcerative Colitis in an Undegraded Form

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2020
The prominent human symbiont Bacteroides fragilis protects animals from intestinal diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, and its capsular polysaccharide plays a key role in reducing inflammation. B. fragilis strain ZY-312 was isolated from the feces of a

Adhesion‐Enhanced Engineered Probiotic for Prolonged Intestinal Retention and Calprotectin‐Responsive IBD Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An intelligent engineered probiotic platform is developed for the precision management of inflammatory bowel disease. By integrating surface‐displayed adhesins with an inflammation‐responsive CAT‐SOD‐GPx tripartite fusion system and mucosal repair factors, this programmable system achieves prolonged intestinal retention and multi‐pronged therapy.
