Current Methods for Capsular Typing of Streptococcus pneumoniae

Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2015
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major respiratory tract pathogen causing pneumococcal disease mainly in children aged less than five years and in the elderly. Ninety-eight different capsular types (serotypes) of pneumococci have been reported, but pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) include polysaccharide antigens against only 7, 10 or 13 serotypes. It

The structure of capsular polysaccharide of the pneumococcus type II

Carbohydrate Research, 1975
The pneumococcus type II capsular polysaccharide (SII) is composed of singly-branched hexasaccharide repeating units, for which three alternative structures have been proposed. The correct structure has now been determined by consecutive eliminations of the sugar residues in the side chain.

The specific capsular polysaccharide of Pneumococcus type IV

Carbohydrate Research, 1972
Abstract The specific, capsular polysaccharide (SIV) of Pneumococcus Type IV is shown to contain acetal-linked pyruvic acid, d -galactose, 2-amino-2-deoxy- d -galactose, 2-amino-2-deoxymannose, and 2-amino-2,6-dideoxy- d (?)-galactose in the molar ratios 3:3:3:2:3, the amino sugars presumably being N -acetylated.

Capsular typing of klebsiellae by coagglutination and latex agglutination

Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 1981
A simple method for capsular serotype determination of Klebsiella is described, using staphylococci or latex particles coated by specific antibodies and the supernatant of a bacterial suspension in saline as antigen. These methods may be at least as reliable as other methods and easier to perform and less expensive than other methods.

Structure of Klebsiella Type 61 Capsular Polysaccharide

Carbohydrate Research, 1979
An aldotriouronic acid was isolated from the acid hydrolyzate of the polysaccharide from Klebsiella Type 61 (K-61), and its structure was established. Degradation of the permethylated polysaccharide with base established the identity of the sugar unit preceding the glucosyluronic acid residue.

Structure of the Klebsiella type 10 capsular polysaccharide

Carbohydrate Research, 1986
The capsular polysaccharide from Klebsiella Type 10 was found to contain D-galactose, D-glucose, D-mannose, and D-glucuronic acid in the ratios 3:1:1:1. Acid hydrolysis of the polysaccharide gave one aldobiouronic acid, one aldotriouronic acid, one aldotetraouronic acid, and two neutral disaccharides the structures of which were established. The native

Method for the Serological Typing of the Capsular Polysaccharides of Staphylococcus aureus.

Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 1985
A method is described for typing Staphylococcus aureus capsular polysaccharides that is based on direct bacterial cell agglutination and immunoprecipitation of cell extracts with monospecific antisera. Encapsulated strains were identified by their inagglutinability with teichoic acid antisera. The typing sera reacted specifically with extracts of eight

Types of Posterior Capsular Breaks and Their Surgical Implications

Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 1991
ABSTRACT We studied the pathogenesis, clinical features, and management of posterior capsular breaks in 28 cataract patients during planned extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation surgery. In the age-related cataract group (17 cases), the posterior capsular breaks were fresh, caused by the irrigation-aspiration ...

Streptococcus pneumoniae types 19A and 19F and Streptococcus suis capsular type 8 share common capsular epitopes

Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 1995
Two monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to Streptococcus pneumoniae types 19A and 19F were tested with the 35 reference strains and 334 field strains of Streptococcus suis by dot blotting. Both MAbs reacted with the capsular type 8 reference strain, and one reacted with 69% and one reacted with 100% of 81 S. suis capsular type 8 field strains tested. Epitopes

Structural studies of the capsular polysaccharide of Klebsiella type 37

Carbohydrate Research, 1977
The structure of the Klebsiella type 37 capsular polysaccharide has been investigated. Methylation analysis, various specific degradations, and n.m.r. spectroscopy were the principal methods used. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of tetrasaccharide repeating-units having the structure 4-O-Lac-d-GlcA  4-O-[(S)-1-carboxyethyl]-d ...
