Genetic analysis of the capsular biosynthetic locus from all 90 pneumococcal serotypes. [PDF]
Several major invasive bacterial pathogens are encapsulated. Expression of a polysaccharide capsule is essential for survival in the blood, and thus for virulence, but also is a target for host antibodies and the basis for effective vaccines ...

Sequence diversity within the capsular genes of Streptococcus pneumoniae serogroup 6 and 19. [PDF]
The main virulence factor of Streptococcus pneumoniae is the capsule. The polysaccharides comprising this capsule are encoded by approximately 15 genes and differences in these genes result in different serotypes. The aim of this study was to investigate

Capsular typing of Haemophilus influenzae with a DNA probe
We describe the use of a DNA probe for genotyping clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae. The probe, containing capsulation genes, differentiates between the six Haemophilus serotypes in a Southern blotting procedure. It also hybridizes with a distinctive pattern to DNA from capsule-deficient mutants of serotype b strains, while failing to ...

Characterization of Streptococcus suis capsular type 2 haemolysin [PDF]
The production of a haemolysin by Streptococcus suis capsular type 2 was investigated. Human group O erythrocytes were the most susceptible, followed by horse, sheep, cow and pig red blood cells, which exhibited similar susceptibilities; rabbit erythrocytes were the least susceptible.

Comparison of counterimmunoelectrophoresis and the capsular reaction test for typing of pneumococci [PDF]
The capsular reaction test is recommended as the method of choice for typing of pneumococci. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis also works in most cases, but has the following definite drawbacks. (i) The polysaccharide type antigens of types 7F, 7A, 14, 33F, 33A, and 37 are neutral and therefore do not form precipitates when conventional buffers are used ...
