The singing phenology of Bachman's sparrow: implications for monitoring programs

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We used automated recording units, weather data, and multiple logistic regression with generalized estimating equations to determine the annual singing period and influences on singing behavior of Bachman's sparrow in Texas, USA, surveying daily for 2 years.

Ultrafast time‐resolved X‐ray absorption spectroscopy at FemtoMAX beamline

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
A new setup for femtosecond resolution X‐ray absorption spectroscopy with energy ranging from 2 to 15 keV is established. We report on the development and first experiments at a new X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) endstation at the FemtoMAX beamline of the MAX IV Laboratory.

Human hunters are no substitute for vanishing apex predators

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Our study reveals that human hunters fail to replicate the collective and individual ecological functions of natural apex predators in sustaining biodiversity and promoting stable spatial patterns. These insights are vital for rethinking predator conservation and wildlife management in human‐dominated landscapes.

Toll like receptor agonist effects on human CD8+ T cell activation and expression of T cell checkpoint receptors

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics
We have previously found that murine CD8+ T cells activated with cognate antigen increase the expression of PD-1 and other checkpoint receptors, and this can be attenuated in the presence of specific Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists.

Ecological scale mediates nonlinear relationships of animal nutrient excretion with dissolved organic matter

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We show that nutrient excretion by vertebrates and invertebrates varies nonlinearly with dissolved organic matter concentration and composition and by taxonomic rank, with stronger patterns at the individual compared to the community level. Our findings highlight the importance of examining animal‐mediated nutrient cycling across taxa and ecological ...

Potential vs. Realized Large Carnivore Density: The Influence of Livestock on Carnivore Carrying Capacity Estimation

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
In an unfenced mixed‐use savanna landscape in Namibia, we compared realized densities of leopards and cheetahs estimated using spatial capture–recapture models with prey‐based carrying capacity predictions. Leopard densities exceeded predictions based on wild prey alone but closely matched livestock‐supplemented models, suggesting that vulnerable ...

Dynamic reciprocal interactions between activated T cells and tumor associated macrophages drive macrophage reprogramming and proinflammatory T cell migration within prostate tumor models

open access: yesScientific Reports
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) have been implicated as a tumor microenvironment (TME) cell population, which may be playing a vital role in the inhibition of effective T cell responses in the prostate TME.

Creating Life Stories: Facilitators and Barriers to Participatory Recordkeeping for Children in Out‐Of‐Home Care

open access: yesChild &Family Social Work, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Many young people in out‐of‐home care (OOHC) encounter difficulties when attempting to access their personal histories in the form of photographs, report cards and other key identity memorabilia. As a result of frequent placement changes, limited continuity of relationships and the administrative nature of case files, the personal narratives ...
