Prediction of the meat content of the carcass and valuable carcass parts in French lop rabbits using some traits measured in vivo and post mortem

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2006
The experiment was performed on 60 French lop rabbits raised under extensive conditions and sacrificed at body weight of about 3 kg. It was found that the best indicators of meat weight (g) in rabbit carcasses were body weight, head width and lower thigh

The influence of sex and carcass weight on carcass composition of Serrana kids

open access: yes, 2006
This work aims to evaluate sex and carcass weight effects on carcass composition of kids. Sixty Serrana kids (31 male and 29 female), a Portuguese breed, were used. Kids were slaughtered after 24 h fasting. Carcasses were cooled at 4°C for 24 h, halved and left side was dissected into muscle, subcutaneous fat, intermuscular fat, bone and remainder ...

Macronutrient and micronutrient profiles of meat types: insights into human health and diet

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite considerable advances in global health and nutrition, emerging challenges such as population growth, climate change, and limited natural resources continue to threaten food security. Meat remains an essential component of the human diet, supplying high‐quality proteins, essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals necessary ...

Copaiba oleoresin as a substitute for sodium lasalocid in high‐concentrate diets for lambs: growth performance, ingestive behavior, and metabolic and ruminal parameters

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND The indiscriminate and excessive use of ionophore additives has been associated with the emergence of multi‐resistant pathogenic strains and the global spread of antibiotic resistance, raising serious public health concerns. Thus, plant biocompounds have been the focus of several studies aiming to replace ionophore additives in ...

Body Weight and Carcass Development in Different Lines of Turkeys

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1991
Body weight and carcass component weights of turkeys from a growth-selected line (F), a randombred control population (RBC2), and a commercial sire line (C) were compared at hatch, 4, 8, 12, and 16 wk of age. At hatch there were no significant differences in BW between the F and RBC2 lines, but the C line poults weighed significantly less than the F ...

The art of avoidance: bedsite use, antipredator strategies, and predation risk in white‐tailed deer fawns

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Horizontal visibility, rather than concealment cover, drove fawn bedsite use and predation risk. Greater field of view decreased the odds of coyote predation, likely by facilitated by early detection. As fawns transitioned from hiders to followers, they shifted from using dense overstory concealment to more open overstory that favored improved escape ...

Effect of age class on the survivorship and spatial movement patterns of headstarted Texas horned lizards soft‐released into an urban population

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
When compared to resident lizards of the corresponding age class, juvenile headstarted Texas horned lizards soft‐released into an urban population exhibited more favorable responses to short‐term translocation objectives (i.e., daily movement rates, home range sizes, and survival rates) than did conspecifics headstarted to the adult age class ...

Mapping landowners' willingness to allow recreational deer harvest on their property for managing chronic wasting disease

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We demonstrate an approach for mapping the probability of landowners' willingness to allow wildlife management actions on their property using chronic wasting disease as a case study. Larger property sizes were associated with higher landowner willingness. We mapped predictions across the contiguous United States at the census tract level.

AVALIAÇÃO ULTRASONOGRÁFICA DA QUALIDADE DE CARCAÇA DE OVINOS SANTA INÊS

open access: yesCiência Animal Brasileira, 2013
Ultrassonography is an important option to evaluate carcass composition and quality, as it is a non-invasive technique which quantifies different tissues in live animals.
