ABSTRACT Background Procalcitonin (PCT) levels often rise after cardiac surgery due to an ongoing postoperative inflammatory response. The changes in PCT levels are useful for the early detection of postoperative infections. We assessed the variation of procalcitonin levels in patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery at the leading tertiary cardiac

ABSTRACT Prior surveys of chronic automated red blood cell exchange (RCE) for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) have identified considerable procedural variability, especially with the use of isovolemic hemodilution red blood cell exchange (IHD‐RCE).

In patients without atrial fibrillation undergoing mitral valve repair, prophylactic left atrial appendage occlusion significantly reduces long‐term thromboembolic events and early in‐hospital stroke, without increasing mortality, although it is associated with a higher incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation.

Innovative Drug Delivery Systems for the Treatment of Glaucoma
This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current topical drug delivery strategies for ocular hypotensive agents in glaucoma therapy. Additionally, it discusses the potential impact of emerging nanotechnological and biomaterial‐based systems in shaping the future of ophthalmic drug delivery, with an emphasis on enhancing efficacy, safety,

Abstract Background and aims Tissue‐retained needles from intravenous drug use can cause rare but severe complications, ranging from local to systemic infections to needle embolization. Due to the limited evidence and the lack of epidemiological studies on the issue, we systematically reviewed the literature focusing on case reports and case series on ...

Summary Introduction Uncertainty remains regarding whether the time of day that cardiac surgery is performed affects postoperative outcomes or if the observed variation can be explained by patient or surgical factors. Methods A secondary analysis of prospectively collected data was conducted to examine the association between time of cardiac surgery ...

Evaluation of a Rat Cardiopulmonary Bypass Model Using an Extraluminal Flow Oxygenator
A rat cardiopulmonary bypass model was constructed incorporating the developed extraluminal flow oxygenator and compared with a commercial intraluminal flow oxygenator. Both oxygenators demonstrated comparable gas exchange performance and inflammatory responses; however, the one developed in this study better preserved PLT counts.
