Natural overexpression of CAROTENOID CLEAVAGE DIOXYGENASE 4 in tomato alters carotenoid flux
Abstract Carotenoids and apocarotenoids function as pigments and flavor volatiles in plants that enhance consumer appeal and offer health benefits. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum.) fruit, especially those of wild species, exhibit a high degree of natural variation in carotenoid and apocarotenoid contents.

Assessing the Role of Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 4 Homoeologs in Carotenoid Accumulation and Plant Growth in Tetraploid Wheat [PDF]
The dietary needs of humans for provitamin A carotenoids arise from their inability to synthesize vitamin A de novo. To improve the status of this essential micronutrient, special attention has been given to biofortification of staple foods, such as wheat grains, which are consumed in large quantities but contain low levels of provitamin A carotenoids.

Cloning and functional characterization of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 4 genes [PDF]
Although a number of plant carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase (CCD) genes have been functionally characterized in different plant species, little is known about the biochemical role and enzymatic activities of members of the subclass 4 (CCD4). To gain insight into their biological function, CCD4 genes were isolated from apple (Malus x domestica, MdCCD4 ...

The role of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases in the regulation of carotenoid profiles during maturation in citrus fruit [PDF]
To investigate the relationship between a carotenoid profile and gene expression for carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases, three citrus varieties that exhibit different 9-cis-violaxanthin levels in their juice sacs, Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.; a variety accumulating a low level of 9-cis-violaxanthin), Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis Osbeck ...

New Insight into the Cleavage Reaction of Nostoc sp. Strain PCC 7120 Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase in Natural and Nonnatural Carotenoids [PDF]
ABSTRACT Carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) are enzymes that catalyze the oxidative cleavage of carotenoids at a specific double bond to generate apocarotenoids. In this study, we investigated the activity and substrate preferences of NSC3, a CCD of Nostoc sp. strain PCC 7120, in vivo

Crocin biosynthesis in Crocus has been proposed to proceed through a zeaxanthin cleavage pathway catalyzed by carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 2 (CCD2), and followed by glucosylation reactions catalyzed by CsGT2 (UGT74AD1).

Overexpression of the Gene Encoding Solanum lycopersicum Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 1A (SlCCD1A) Regulates Tomato Flavor Quality [PDF]
SlCCD1A-OE lines of cherry tomato CI1005 and large-fruited tomato AC were selected to investigate the effect of SlCCD1A on tomato flavor quality. The transgenic plants were identified by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the volatile ...

Role of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 1 (CCD1) in apocarotenoid biogenesis revisited [PDF]
Oxidative tailoring of C(40) carotenoids by double bond-specific cleavage enzymes (carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases, CCDs) gives rise to various apocarotenoids. AtCCD1 generating C(13) and C(14) apocarotenoids and orthologous enzymes in other plants are the only CCDs acting in the cytosol, while the hitherto presumed C(40) substrate is localized in the
