Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

Enhanced Rishirilide Biosynthesis by a Rare In-Cluster Phosphopantetheinyl Transferase in Streptomyces xanthophaeus

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2022
Phosphopantetheinyl transferases (PPTases) play important roles in activating apo-acyl carrier proteins (apo-ACPs) and apo-peptidyl carrier proteins (apo-PCPs) in both primary and secondary metabolism. PPTases catalyze the posttranslational modifications

Mono-exponential Current Attenuation with Distance across 16 nm Thick Bacteriorhodopsin Multilayers [PDF]

open access: yesAdv. Funct. Mater. 2024, 2408110
The remarkable ability of natural proteins to conduct electricity in the dry state over long distances remains largely inexplicable despite intensive research. In some cases, a (weakly) exponential length-attenuation, as in off-resonant tunneling transport, extends to thicknesses even beyond 10 nm.

Interaction vesicles as emerging mediators of host‐pathogen molecular crosstalk and their implications for infection dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interaction extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are hybrid vesicles formed through host‐pathogen communication. They facilitate immune evasion, transfer pathogens' molecules, increase host cell uptake, and enhance virulence. This Perspective article illustrates the multifunctional roles of iEVs and highlights their emerging relevance in infection dynamics ...

Toward a better analysis of secreted proteins: the example of the myeloid cells secretome [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
The analysis of secreted proteins represents a challenge for current proteomics techniques. Proteins are usually secreted at low concentrations in the culture media, which makes their recovery difficult. In addition, culture media are rich in salts and other compounds interfering with most proteomics techniques, which makes selective precipitation of ...

Sorption and spatial distribution of protein globules in charged hydrogel particles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We have theoretically studied the uptake of a non-uniformly charged biomolecule, suitable to represent a globular protein or a drug, by a charged hydrogel carrier in the presence of a 1:1 electrolyte. Based on the analysis of a physical interaction Hamiltonian including monopolar, dipolar and Born (self-energy) contributions derived from linear ...

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

Aligning Multiple Protein Structures using Biochemical and Biophysical Properties [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Aligning multiple protein structures can yield valuable information about structural similarities among related proteins, as well as provide insight into evolutionary relationships between proteins in a family. We have developed an algorithm (msTALI) for aligning multiple protein structures using biochemical and biophysical properties, including ...

PWM2Vec: An Efficient Embedding Approach for Viral Host Specification from Coronavirus Spike Sequences [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
COVID-19 pandemic, is still unknown and is an important open question. There are speculations that bats are a possible origin. Likewise, there are many closely related (corona-) viruses, such as SARS, which was found to be transmitted through civets. The study of the different hosts which can be potential carriers and transmitters of deadly viruses to ...
