Climate Change versus Human Population and Development: Hurricanes, Urbanization, and Tourism Impacts on Land Change in the Tropical Island Ecosystems of Roatán, Honduras [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Relatively little scholarship has compared the ecological impact of acute climate-related events versus chronic human pressures. Despite mounting pressures from climate change and rapid tourism development across the Caribbean, even less research has ...

Cascade emission in electron beam ion trap plasma of W$^{25+}$ ion

open access: yes, 2015
Spectra of the W$^{25+}$ ion are studied using the collisional-radiative model (CRM) with an ensuing cascade emission. It is determined that the cascade emission boosts intensities only of a few lines in the $10 - 3$ nm range.

Scale Separation Scheme for Simulating Superfluid Turbulence: Kelvin-Wave Cascade [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A Kolmogorov-type cascade of Kelvin waves--the distortion waves on vortex lines--plays a key part in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures.

The anti‐CRISPR protein AcrIE8.1 inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system by directly binding to the Cascade subunit Cas11

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.

Direct numerical experiment on measuring of dispersion relation for gravity waves in the presence of condensate

open access: yes, 2012
During previous numerical experiments on isotropic turbulence of surface gravity waves we observed formation of the long wave background (condensate). It was shown (Korotkevich, Phys. Rev. Lett. vol.

Locality and stability of the cascades of two-dimensional turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We investigate and clarify the notion of locality as it pertains to the cascades of two-dimensional turbulence. The mathematical framework underlying our analysis is the infinite system of balance equations that govern the generalized unfused structure ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

ACCESS: an empirically-based framework developed by the International Nursing CASCADE Consortium to address genomic disparities through the nursing workforce

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics
Introduction: Efforts are needed across disciplines to close disparities in genomic healthcare. Nurses are the most numerous trained healthcare professionals worldwide and can play a key role in addressing disparities across the continuum of care. ACCESS

Mass Transfer Features of Wavy-Bottomed Cascade Photobioreactors

open access: yesChemEngineering, 2021
It has been suggested that the energy-efficient production of microalgae biomass can be more easily obtained in short light path photobioreactors that can be operated at high biomass concentration.
