Antimelanoma activities of chimeric thiazole–androstenone derivatives

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2021
The discovery of chimeric anti-melanoma agents is reported. These molecules are potent growth suppressors of melanoma cells in vitro with growth inhibition of 50% (GI50) values as low as 1.32 µM.

Patterns of genomic instability in gastric cancer: clinical implications and perspectives. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In gastric cancer (GC) the loss of genomic stability represents a key molecular step that occurs early in the carcinogenesis process and creates a permissive environment for the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in tumor suppressor genes

Targeting potassium channels and autophagy to defeat chemoresistance

open access: yesMolecular & Cellular Oncology, 2020
Both autophagy and hERG1 potassium channels have been shown to promote tumor progression and resistance to treatment. Our findings indicate that the antibiotic clarithromycin can target hERG1 and modulate autophagy to promote the death of chemoresistant ...

Identification and Functional Analysis of Apoptotic Protease Activating Factor-1 (Apaf-1) from Spodoptera litura

open access: yesInsects, 2021
Apoptotic protease activating factor-1 (Apaf-1) is an adaptor molecule, essential for activating initiator caspase and downstream effector caspases, which directly cause apoptosis.

Deciphering the complex signalling systems that regulate intestinal epithelial cell death processes and shedding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Intestinal epithelial cells play a fundamental role in maintaining homeostasis. Shedding of intestinal cells in a controlled manner is critical to maintenance of barrier function.

Genetic analysis of long-lived families reveals novel variants influencing high density-lipoprotein cholesterol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) have an inverse relationship to the risks of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and have also been associated with longevity.

Inflammatory caspase substrate specificities

open access: yesmBio
Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases that act as molecular scissors to cleave substrates and regulate biological processes such as programmed cell death and inflammation.

SRp30a (ASF/SF2) regulates the alternative splicing of caspase-9 pre-mRNA and is required for ceramide-responsiveness

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2006
Two splice variants are derived from the caspase-9 gene, proapoptotic caspase-9a and antiapoptotic caspase-9b, by either the inclusion or exclusion of an exon 3, 4, 5, and 6 cassette.
