Detecting acute kidney injury in horses by measuring the concentration of symmetric dimethylarginine in serum

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica, 2021
Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) in horses may develop as a complication of a primary disease or following the administration of nephrotoxic drugs, and may pose a diagnostic challenge.

‘Wound cat’

open access: yesJournal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2006
‘Wound man’ refers to a stylised diagram used in early medical textbooks to illustrate the various injuries that the human body can sustain in battle. We have adapted this concept to create ‘Wound cat’, as a way to emphasise the type and location of injuries cats may inflict on one another during combat.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

The Fecal Microbiome in Cats with Diarrhea

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Recent studies have revealed that microbes play an important role in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases in various animal species, but only limited data is available about the microbiome in cats with GI disease.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Microbiota alterations in acute and chronic gastrointestinal inflammation of cats and dogs.

open access: yesWorld Journal of Gastroenterology, 2014
The intestinal microbiota is the collection of the living microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses) inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract. Novel bacterial identification approaches have revealed that the gastrointestinal microbiota of dogs ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Domestic cat management in the UK: learnings from a global perspective

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
The overpopulation of domestic cats has the potential to result in negative outcomes for cats, people and the surrounding environment. A whole-population approach to management requires a system of services considering owned, shelter and free-living ...

Searching for ivermectin resistance in a Strongylidae population of horses stabled in Poland

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2017
Background There are no available studies describing the possible resistance of strongyles to ivermectin in horses in Poland. One hundred seventy three horses from nine stud farms from South-Western Poland were studied.
