AbstractCattle‐yak, the hybrid offspring of yak (Bos grunniens) and cattle (Bos taurus), serves as a unique model to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying reproductive isolation. While female cattle‐yaks are fertile, the males are completely sterile due to spermatogenic arrest at the meiosis stage and massive germ cell apoptosis.

Quantitative N-Glycoproteomic Analysis of Cattle-Yak and Yak Longissimus Thoracis
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2023In this study, the N-glycosylated protein profiles of cattle-yak longissimus thoracis (CYLT) and yak longissimus thoracis (YLT) were comparatively analyzed using quantitative proteomics techniques. A total of 76 differential N-glycosylated proteins (DGPs) were screened from 181 quantified N-glycoproteins, indicating that differences in N-glycosylation ...

Abnormal functions of Leydig cells in crossbred cattle–yak showing infertility
Reproduction in Domestic Animals, 2020AbstractIn Mongolia, yak (Bos grunniens) are able to live in alpine areas and their products greatly influence the lives of the local people. Increased vigour in hybridized yak and cattle can offer benefits for livestock farmers. However, male hybrids show reproductive defects resulting from spermatogenesis arrest, affecting the conservation and ...

Hybridization between yak Poephagus grunniens and taurine Bos taurus or indicine B. indicus cattle has been widely practiced throughout the yak geographical range, and gene flow is expected to have occurred between these species.

Molecular characterization and epigenetic regulation of Mei1 in cattle and cattle–yak
Gene, 2015Mei1 is required for the homologous recombination of meiosis during the mammalian spermatogenesis. However, the knowledge about bovine Mei1 (bMei1) is still limited. In the present study, we cloned and characterized the bMei1, and investigated the epigenetic regulatory mechanism of bMei1 expression in vivo and in vitro. The full length coding region of

Isolation and characterization of spermatogenic cells from cattle, yak and cattleyak
Animal Reproduction Science, 2018Cattleyak forms the first generation in the cross-breeding of cattle (Bos taurus) and yak (Bos grunniens), the purpose of which is to increase the yak's performance in meat and milk production. The female cattleyak is fertile while the male remains sterile due to spermatogenic arrest.

Cattle-yak, the hybrid offspring of yak and taurine cattle, exhibits male sterility with normal female fertility. Spermatogenesis is arrested in adult cattle-yak, and apoptosis is elevated in spermatogenic cells. Currently, the mechanisms underlying these defects remain elusive.

Proteomics, 2023
AbstractCattle‐yak, the interspecific hybrid between yak and taurine cattle, exhibits male‐specific sterility. Massive loss of spermatogenic cells, especially spermatocytes, results in azoospermia in these animals. Currently, the mechanisms underlying meiosis block and defects in spermatocyte development remain elusive.

Cattle, Yaks, Traction, and the Bronze Age Spread of Pastoralism into the Mongolian Steppe
2022Cattle traction helped increase crop yields and enhance trade of staple goods among sedentary agricultural communities for millennia, but oxen labor was also important for mobile pastoralists, particularly in Inner Asia where yaks were also herded, and was used to carry materials, portable dwellings, and people.

Reproduction in Domestic Animals, 2021
AbstractAlthough the interspecies hybridization of bovids, such as cattle–yak (Bos taurus × Bos grunniens), has heterosis benefits, the infertility of hybrid males affects the maintenance of dominant traits in subsequent generations. To achieve reproductive capacity, male germ cell development requires coordinated changes in gene expression, including ...
