Identification of functional and diverse circulating cancer‐associated fibroblasts in metastatic castration‐naïve prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote cancer growth, invasion (metastasis), and drug resistance. Here, we identified functional and diverse circulating CAFs (cCAFs) in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa). cCAFs were found in higher numbers and were functional and diverse in mPCa patients versus healthy individuals, suggesting their ...

Surfaceome: a new era in the discovery of immune evasion mechanisms of circulating tumor cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the era of immunotherapies, many patients either do not respond or eventually develop resistance. We propose to pave the way for proteomic analysis of surface‐expressed proteins called surfaceome, of circulating tumor cells. This approach seeks to identify immune evasion mechanisms and discover potential therapeutic targets. Circulating tumor cells (

A deep artificial neural network based model for underlying cause of death prediction from death certificates [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Underlying cause of death coding from death certificates is a process that is nowadays undertaken mostly by humans with a potential assistance from expert systems such as the Iris software. It is as a consequence an expensive process that can in addition suffer from geospatial discrepancies, thus severely impairing the comparability of death statistics

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Preliminary study of mortality by cause and sociodemographic characteristics, municipality of San Francisco, Antioquia (Columbia), 2001-2010 [PDF]

open access: yesRervista Nacional de Salud P\'ublica, Universidad de Antioquia, 2015, 2019
Objective: Determining the structure of mortality from causes and sociodemographic characteristics, in the municipality of San Francisco, Antioquia, 2001-2010. Methodology: Quantitative descriptive study with retrospective longitudinal data obtained from secondary source of death events through databases in electronic media supplied by the DANE.

Trends in mortality risk by education level and cause of death among US White women from 1986 to 2006.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Public Health, 2013
OBJECTIVES To elucidate why the inverse association between education level and mortality risk (the gradient) has increased markedly among White women since the mid-1980s, we identified causes of death for which the gradient increased.

Circulating tumor cells: advancing personalized therapy in small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that spreads rapidly to secondary sites such as the brain and liver. Cancer cells circulating in the blood, “circulating tumor cells” (CTCs), have demonstrated prognostic value in SCLC, and evaluating biomarkers on CTCs could guide treatment decisions such as for PARP inhibitors ...

Mortality for circulatory and respiratory causes associated with influenza circulation in Russia during the 2013/14 through the 2018/19 seasons [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Background: Information on influenza-associated mortality in Russia is limited. Methods: Using previously developed methodology (Goldstein et al., Epidemiology 2012), we regressed the monthly rates of mortality for respiratory causes, as well as circulatory causes linearly against the monthly proxies for the incidence of influenza A/H3N2, A/H1N1 and ...

Cause of death in Alzheimer's disease: a cohort study.

open access: yesQJM : monthly journal of the Association of Physicians, 2013
BACKGROUND Reporting of cause of death in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) has changed over the past few decades but concerns persist over the accuracy of death certificate completion in this setting.
