CD133: a stem cell biomarker and beyond [PDF]

open access: yesExperimental Hematology & Oncology, 2013
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) or tumor initiating cells (TICs) contribute to tumorigenesis, metastasis, recurrence and chemoresistance. CD133, a pentaspan membrane glycoprotein, has been used as a stem cell biomarker for isolation of stem-like cells from a variety of normal and pathological tissues as well as cell lines since its discovery in 1999.

CD133 does not enrich for the stem cell activity in vivo in adult mouse prostates

open access: yesStem Cell Research, 2016
CD133 is widely used as a marker for stem/progenitor cells in many organ systems. Previous studies using in vitro stem cell assays have suggested that the CD133-expressing prostate basal cells may serve as the putative prostate stem cells.

CD36‐mediated lipid rewiring in the metabolic adaptation of tumour ecosystems

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Nutrient deprivation drives a lipid‐centric shift in tumour metabolic symbiosis and signalling network. CD36 functions as a bidirectional bridge, transferring fatty acids from stromal donors (adipocytes, CAFs) to the ecosystem tumour‐ and microenvironment‐dependently.

Epigenetic control of cellular plasticity in breast cancer progression

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Cancer cells undergo cell state transitions, termed plasticity, driving cancer progression and dictating therapeutic response. We define breast cancer plasticity into four interconnected processes: (1) breast cancer stem cell fates, (2) epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition, (3) maintenance of luminal identity, and (4) acquisition of therapeutic ...

Stem Cells From Dental Pulp, Periodontal Tissues, and Other Oral Sources: Biological Concepts and Regenerative Potential

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
A graphical abstract recapping the different sources of dental, periodontal, and other oral‐derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and their regenerative mechanisms and potentials. The review's article findings bridge fundamental biological science with translational advances, highlighting the significance of MSCs in craniofacial regenerative ...

UAB30, A Novel Rexinoid Agonist, Decreases Stemness In Group 3 Medulloblastoma Human Cell Line Xenografts

open access: yesTranslational Oncology, 2019
PURPOSE: In spite of advances in therapy for some subtypes, group 3 medulloblastoma continues to portend a poor prognosis. A subpopulation of medulloblastoma cells expressing the cell surface marker CD133 have been posited as possible stem cell like ...

Mapping the Bioenergetic Landscape of Oral Cancer Stem Cells: A Systematic Review

open access: yesOral Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSSC) remains highly lethal, with resistance largely driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs). Mitochondrial reprogramming supports CSC redox control, self‐renewal, and survival. This systematic review aimed to synthesize mitochondrial mechanisms sustaining CSCs in OSCC and evaluate their therapeutic ...

Porphyromonas gingivalis GroEL exacerbates orthotopic allograft transplantation vasculopathy via impairment of endothelial cell function

open access: yesMolecular Oral Microbiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Orthotopic allograft transplantation (OAT) is a significant approach to addressing organ failure. However, persistent immune responses to the allograft affect chronic rejection, which induces OAT vasculopathy (OATV) and organ failure. Porphyromonas gingivalis can infiltrate remote organs via the bloodstream, thereby intensifying the severity ...

Expression and significance of CD133 and ABCG2 in endometriosis

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2015
Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease and exact pathogenesis is still unclear. Recently, an increasing interest has been given to the potential role of stem cells in the development of endometriosis. The aim of this study was to test the expression of sterness-related markers CD133 and ABCG2 in endometriosis.CD133 and ABCG2 protein expression

Role of RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signalling pathway in sepsis‐associated acute kidney injury

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Sepsis‐associated acute kidney injury (SA‐AKI) is a common clinical syndrome in critically ill patients, and its high mortality rate is closely related to complex pathological mechanisms. Existing studies have shown that the pathophysiological process of SA‐AKI involves complex multi‐mechanism interactions, including an uncontrolled systemic ...
