Plasma circulating cell–free DNA integrity and relative telomere length as diagnostic biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research
In clinical specialties focusing on neurological disorders, there is a need for comprehensive and integrated non-invasive, sensitive, and specific testing methods. Both Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy are classified as α-synucleinopathies,

Cell-free enzymatic production of glucaric acid

open access: yes, 2019
Cell-free biocatalysis with a number of enzymes is a fast growing and potentially high impact field in synthetic biology for the bio-manufacture of existing and novel fine or platform chemicals and biofuels.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

SeeThrough: a rationally designed skull clearing technique for in vivo brain imaging

open access: yesNature Communications
Light scattering in the skull limits optical access to the brain. Here we present SeeThrough, a skull-clearing technique that enables simple, high-resolution, and minimally-invasive brain imaging without skull removal.

Two homologous Agr-like quorum-sensing systems cooperatively control adherence, cell morphology, and cell viability properties in Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1

open access: yes, 2008
A two-component regulatory system of Lactobacillus plantarum, encoded by genes designated lamK and lamR (hpk10 and rrp10), was studied. The lamK and lamR genes encode proteins which are highly homologous to the quorum-sensing histidine kinase LamC and ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A direct computer control concept for mammalian cell fermentation processes

open access: yes, 1994
Büntemeyer H, Marzahl R, Lehmann J. A direct computer control concept for mammalian cell fermentation processes. Cytotechnology. 1994;15(1-3):271-279.In the last 10 years, new assignments and the special demands of mammalian cells to the culture ...

Cell Migration with Multiple Pseudopodia: Temporal and Spatial Sensing Models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cell migration triggered by pseudopodia (or “false feet”) is the most used method of locomotion. A 3D finite element model of a cell migrating over a 2D substrate is proposed, with a particular focus on the mechanical aspects of the biological phenomenon.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
