Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

The Diversification of Cell Death and Immunity: Memento Mori.

open access: yes, 2019
Why do cells have so many ways to die? Why does "cellular suicide" exist at all? In the war against pathogens and rogue cells, organisms developed cellular suicide as a last resort. Fighting an evolutionary arms race, cell death pathways have adapted and

Viruses do replicate in cell-free systems [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2012
Klingeborn et al. (1) reported a systematic study of the infectivity of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) infectious agent generated de novo in cell-free reactions. They convincingly demonstrated the generation of new TSE infectivity in reactions primed by infected brain homogenates.

The pyruvate generator is a common phenomenon in mitochondria from different rat and mouse brain regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The pyruvate generator, which causes activation of respiration by extra‐mitochondrial Ca2+, is also present and functional in rat brainstem mitochondria, as it is in other brain regions. This finding is confirmed by experiments with a fully reconstituted malate–aspartate shuttle (MAS).

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Knowing one's place: a free-energy approach to pattern regulation.

open access: yes, 2015
Understanding how organisms establish their form during embryogenesis and regeneration represents a major knowledge gap in biological pattern formation.
