The human adrenal cortex is a complex endocrine organ that secretes mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and adrenal androgens. These steroids arise from morphologically and biochemically distinct zones of the adrenal gland. Studying secretion of these distinct steroid hormones can make use of cells isolated from the adrenal gland but this requires ...

The range of in vivo or in vitro immortalized cell lines currently available provides a variety of model systems for studies of normal and pathological cell functions. The cell lines have been derived from spontaneous or experimentally induced tumors, or through in vitro immortalization.

The cells making up the lining of the synovium have long been known as type A and B synoviocytes, with an intermediate form sometimes also described. Accumulating evidence shows that the type A cells are macrophages and the type B cells are fibroblasts. Recently, a definite orientation of these cells within the synovial lining has been observed.

Eosinophilic cell lines, HL-60 clone 15 cells and EoL-1 cells, have contributed to clarifying the mechanisms responsible for differentiation into eosinophils. These cells differentiate into eosinophils by continuous histone acetylation. Histone deacetylase inhibitors, sodium butyrate and apicidin, promote the transactivation of various genes in these ...

The ovary is a complex endocrine gland responsible for production of sex steroids and is the source of fertilizable ova for reproduction. It also produces various growth factors, transcription factors and cytokines that assist in the complex signaling pathways of folliculogenesis. The ovary possesses two primary steroidogenic cell types.

A transitional cell carcinoma cell line
In Vitro, 1978A transitional cell carcinoma cell line, COLO 232, was derived from a primary urinary bladder tumor in a Caucasian male. In culture, COLO 232 retained distinct uroepithelial phenotypic traits and produced both carcinoembryonic antigen and adrenocorticotropic hormone. COLO 232 had a chromosome mode of 58 and retained the X and Y chromosomes.

A method is described to establish mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC) lines from hybrid and inbred strains of mice. Attention is paid not only to the methodology for isolation and culture but also to the validation of freshly derived lines, in order to be maintained for prolonged time without significant differentiation or karyotype instability, and to ...

The successful storage of cell lines depends upon many factors, including the condition of the cells to be frozen and the experience of the operator. Attempting to freeze down unhealthy, contaminated or poorly labelled cells can have huge implications for a research laboratory.

Retinoid-sensitive cells and cell lines
1990Publisher Summary This chapter presents a tabulated listing of retinoid-sensitive cells and cell lines. The listing is based on a literature search of a database containing citations from 1983 until May 1989. In all eases, only effects that are due to a retinoid alone are included.
