[Cell sheet engineering--fabrication and utilization of patterned cell sheet].
Nihon rinsho. Japanese journal of clinical medicine, 2008Tissue engineering seeks to provide regenerated tissue architectures in vitro but has not yet successfully created thick, highly vascularized, multi-functional tissues replicating native structure. We have proposed cell sheet engineering to overcome the problems of tissue engineering.

Therapeutic Applications of Mesothelial Cell Sheets
Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, 2014AbstractMesothelial cells are an integral part of the peritoneum and play an important role in maintaining its structural and functional properties. In recent years a number of studies on mesothelial cells have been performed to evaluate the localization, secretional properties and the ability of regeneration and transdifferentiation of these cells ...

Light-induced cell detachment for cell sheet technology
Biomaterials, 2013The phenomenon of light-induced cell detachment is reported. Mouse calvaria-derived, pre-osteoblastic (MC3T3-E1) cells were cultured on a TiO(2) nanodot-coated quartz substrate. After 20 min of UV365 illumination, over 90% of the cells would detach from the surface. Moreover, intact cell sheets could be obtained in the same way.

The characteristics of cultured mucosal cells from the oral mucosa were investigated and compared with those of cultured epidermal cells. Total cell counts showed that mucosal cells possessed greater proliferating ability than epidermal cells. The results of 3(4,5-dimethyle-thiazoyl-2-yl)2,5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay confirmed this observation ...

Cell Sheet Engineering and Kidney Diseases
2018Treatment using the cell sheet technology has been applied to various organs, including the cornea, heart, esophagus, periodontium, cartilage, middle ear, and lungs. It has been shown that the therapeutic efficacy of cell sheet transplantation involves 2 aspects, supplementation of cells and provision of cytokines to the affected organ.

Light Sheet Microscopy in Cell Biology
2012Light sheet-based fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) is emerging as a powerful imaging technique for the life sciences. LSFM provides an exceptionally high imaging speed, high signal-to-noise ratio, low level of photo-bleaching, and good optical penetration depth.

Effect of Cell–Cell Interactions on the Observable Strength of Adhesion of Sheets of Cells
Annals of Biomedical Engineering, 1999Previous research in cellular adhesion has focused primarily on studying isolated cells under conditions where cells do not interact with each other. However, in vivo cells form sheets where both cell-substratum and cell-cell interactions contribute to the overall adhesive behavior.

Despite of the progress made to engineer structured microtissues such as BioMEMS and 3D bioprinting, little control exists how microtissues transform as they mature, as the misbalance between cell-generated forces and the strength of cell-cell and cell-substrate contacts can result in unintended tissue deformations and ruptures.

Cell sheets can be prepared by culturing cells at 37 degrees C on temperature-responsive surfaces, modified with poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) at a thickness of 20-30 nm. Cultured cell sheets are successfully harvested and manipulated by simple temperature changes from 37 degrees C to 20 degrees C due to hydrophobic/hydrophilic changes of the dish ...

Basic Considerations with Cell Sheets
2011The foundation of cell sheet engineering is to harvest cells in a minimally destructive way. This way, the cells that retain their cell-to-cell contact show a higher expression of surface proteins, and retain their more highly developed functions than cells harvested enzymatically.
