Why size matters: altering cell size
Current Opinion in Genetics & Development, 2002Several genes involved in growth control have lately been demonstrated to exhibit more potent effects on cell size than on cell proliferation. Many of these genes direct protein and ribosomal synthesis, highlighting the interdependence between cell size and macromolecular content.

Epithelial homeostasis: Cell size shapes cell fate
Current Biology, 2023A new study shows that cell size, in conjunction with specific signaling pathways, controls apoptosis within developing tissues. Cells with smaller sizes and relatively smaller sizes compared to their neighbors exhibit an increased likelihood of undergoing apoptosis. These processes are regulated by the Hippo/YAP and Notch pathways, respectively.

Cell size versus body size in geophilomorph centipedes
The Science of Nature, 2015Variation in animal body size is the result of a complex interplay between variation in cell number and cell size, but the latter has seldom been considered in wide-ranging comparative studies, although distinct patterns of variation have been described in the evolution of different lineages.

Size Distribution of Lymph Cells
Scandinavian Journal of Haematology, 1970With the presently available equipment (Coulter counter in combination with a multichannel analyzer) reproducible and biologically meaningfull cell volume distributions can be recorded within a short time (2–3 min) from a large sample of cells (105). Lymph cells remain nearly stable for 2–3 hours in lymph with heparin as anticoagulant. On dilution with

Anuran Vocal Communication: Effects of Genome Size, Cell Number and Cell Size
Brain, Behavior and Evolution, 2021Significant variation in genome size occurs among anuran amphibians and can affect cell size and number. In the gray treefrog complex in North America, increases in cell size in autotriploids of the diploid (<i>Hyla chrysoscelis</i>) altered the temporal structure of mate-attracting vocalizations and auditory selectivity for these ...

Annual Review of Genetics, 2019
The genetic control of the characteristic cell sizes of different species and tissues is a long-standing enigma. Plants are convenient for studying this question in a multicellular context, as their cells do not move and are easily tracked and measured from organ initiation in the meristems to subsequent morphogenesis and differentiation.

For many years, it has been believed that diffusion is the principle motive force for distributing molecules within the cell. Yet, our current information about the cell makes this improbable. Furthermore, the argument that limitations responsible for the relative constancy of cell size--which seldom varies by more than a factor of 2, whereas organisms

Dielectrophoresis of cell-size liposomes
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1994The dielectrophoresis (DEP) behavior of cell size liposomes were studied in the frequency range from 20 kHz to 3 MHz. Liposomes in the size of about 10 microns in diameter were made from egg phosphatidylcholine (PC), egg phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), egg phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and brain phosphatidylserine (PS).

Extracellular control of cell size
Nature Cell Biology, 2001Both cell growth (cell mass increase) and progression through the cell division cycle are required for sustained cell proliferation. Proliferating cells in culture tend to double in mass before each division, but it is not known how growth and division rates are co-ordinated to ensure that cell size is maintained.
