Cell Viability Assays: Introduction

2011
The measurement of cell viability plays a fundamental role in all forms of cell culture. Sometimes it is the main purpose of the experiment, such as in toxicity assays. Alternatively, cell viability can be used to -correlate cell behaviour to cell number, providing a more accurate picture of, for example, anabolic -activity.

Motility, viability, and calcium in the sperm cells

Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine, 2013
Sperm cells are complicated in vitro models. Their viability is limited, and physiology is complex. The study of their properties is of great application in the animal production as viable and functional gametes are essential. It has been shown that the decrease of sperm cell viability parallels an increase of the reactive oxygen species (ROS ...

Criteria of Viability of Isolated Liver Cells

Hoppe-Seyler´s Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie, 1975
36.4 +/Various cellular parameters were measured with regard to their usefulness as criteria of viability of isolated cells. Stainability by trypan blue and release of lactate dehydrogenase indicate only severe irreversible damage of cells. Neither endogenous respiration nor even the ATP/ADP ratio is a sensitive criterion of viability.

Treatment viability of stem cells in ophthalmology

Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2010
Adult ocular stem cells have the potential to restore vision in patients previously deemed incurable. This review summarizes strides in stem cell research and stumbling blocks that must be overcome to enable treatment viability in ophthalmology.Stem/progenitor cells located in different regions of the eye are capable of differentiating enabling cell ...

Viability measurements in mammalian cell systems

Analytical Biochemistry, 1989
Abstract The term “cellular viability” and the diverse assays used to determine viability can strongly influence the interpretation of experimental results. With such one-component systems as purified enzymes, an effect usually can be assigned unambiguously to the modification of a specific enzymatic property.

Influence of mechanical stress on cell viability

Biorheology: The Official Journal of the International Society of Biorheology, 2006
The cartilage is a hydrated connective tissue in joints that withstands and distributes mechanical forces. The chondrocytes utilize mechanical signals to regulate their metabolic activity through complex biological and biophysical interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM).

Analysis of Cell Viability by the alamarBlue Assay

Cold Spring Harbor Protocols, 2018
This protocol describes viability measurements for cell cultures in a 96-well tissue culture plate using alamarBlue (resazurin). The assay can be modified to accommodate larger plates; however, for a preliminary analysis of transfection reagents and parameters of the transfection protocol on cell viability, a 96-well plate format is the most cost ...

Maintenance of Cell Viability

Circulation, 1969
An early distinction between the early and reversible changes of cellular ischemia and the irreversible changes of cell necrosis is essential to a rational program for the treatment of coronary artery disease, to a definition of the permissible limits of nonperfusion of the anoxic arrested heart at open-heart surgery, and to a determination of the ...

Progesterone as a regulator of granulosa cell viability

The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2003
Progesterone (P4) prevents numerous cells, including uterine, mammary and ovarian cells, from undergoing apoptosis. Interestingly, P4 prevents apoptosis of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs), which do not express the classic nuclear P4 receptor. This review presents data that support a non-genomic action of P4 in granulosa cells.

Signals that maintain leukemic cell viability

Blood, 2008
Although integrins and cytokines have been reported as triggers for preventing apoptosis and maintaining viability of CLL cells in vivo, evidence presented here by Muzio and colleagues suggests that self-antigens may be responsible for this activity in a subset of CLL patients.
