Structure and Nanomechanics of Model Membranes by Atomic Force Microscopy and Spectroscopy: Insights into the Role of Cholesterol and Sphingolipids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Biological membranes mediate several biological processes that are directly associated with their physical properties but sometimes difficult to evaluate.

N-Hexyl-0-glucosyl sphingosine, an inhibitor of glucosyl ceramide, β-glucosidase

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1973
A synthetic analog of glucocerebroside, N-hexyl-0-glucosyl sphingosine, was found to inhibit the glucosidase in rat spleen that hydrolyzes glucocerebroside. At a concentration of 1 μm, the analog inhibited the enzyme by 48%.

Effects of prolonged darkness and temperature on the lipid metabolism in the benthic diatom Navicula perminuta from the Arctic Adventfjorden, Svalbard [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Arctic represents an extreme habitat for phototrophic algae due to long periods of darkness caused by the polar night (~4 months darkness). Benthic diatoms, which dominate microphytobenthic communities in shallow water regions, can survive this dark ...

Effect of cerebroside preparations on sterol excretion in the rat*

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1960
The addition of cerebroside preparations to synthetic diets fed to rats caused an increased excretion of sterol in the feces as measured by the Liebermann-Burchard reaction.

Structure of biologically active and inactive cerebrosides prepared from Schizophyllum commune.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1985
A cerebroside fraction prepared from the mycelia of Schizophyllum commune was further fractionated into five components (I-V) by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Fruiting-inducing activity was found in I-IV but not in V.

Fatty acid composition of brain glycolipids in Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia, and cerebrocortical atrophy

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1968
Quantitative fatty acid compositions are reported for human cerebral gray matter glycolipids (gangliosides, cerebrosides, and cerebroside sulfates) in Alzheimer's disease (presenile dementia) and related disorders of the central nervous system.

A Novel Oligosaccharide on Bovine Peripheral Myelin Glycoprotein P0 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Sulfated oligosaccharides have found in glycoproteins in myelin in the PNS, such as P0 and PASII/PMP22. These glycoproteins are involved in the interaction of cell membranes and play important roles in the formation and maintenance of myelin sheaths ...
