Exit, Voice, and Disloyalty [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This Lecture begins with a puzzle about Albert Hirschman’s famous work Exit, Voice, and Loyalty: Why do we make much of exit and voice but utterly neglect loyalty? It’s a question that goes well beyond Hirschman’s book.

The Everett-Wheeler interpretation and the open future [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
I discuss the meaning of probability in the Everett-Wheeler interpretation of quantum mechanics, together with the problem of defining histories. To resolve these, I propose an understanding of probability arising from a form of temporal logic: the ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Brane Inflation and Cosmic String Tension in Superstring Theory

open access: yes, 2005
In a simple reanalysis of the KKLMMT scenario, we argue that the slow roll condition in the D3-anti-D3-brane inflationary scenario in superstring theory requires no more than a moderate tuning. The cosmic string tension is very sensitive to the conformal

Observaciones ontológicas al caos determinista como forma del universo

open access: yesTópicos, 2013
This article tries to explain how some of presuppositions by Determinist Chaos Theory would turn the presence of chance in natural processes into the formal cause of the universe. It also compares this position to a Metaphysic Teleology compatible vision.

A neurodynamic algorithm for dependent joint chance constrained geometric programs

open access: yesResults in Control and Optimization, 2023
This research studies the use of copula theory to model dependencies in joint probabilistic constrained geometric programs with dependent rows. The row vectors are assumed to follow an elliptical distribution, and their dependencies are modeled through a

Is Quantum Suicide Painless? On an Apparent Violation of The Principal Principle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The experimental setup of the self-referential quantum measurement, jovially known as the "quantum suicide" or the "quantum Russian roulette" is analyzed from the point of view of the Principal Principle of David Lewis.

Probability in Orthodox Quantum Mechanics: Probability as a Postulate Versus Probability as an Emergent Phenomenon [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The role of probability in quantum mechanics is reviewed, with a discussion of the ``orthodox'' versus the statistical interpretive frameworks, and of a number of related issues. After a brief summary of sources of unease with quantum mechanics, a survey

David Lewis's Humean Theory of Objective Chance [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophy of Science, 2004
The most important theories in fundamental physics, quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, posit objective probabilities or chances. As important as chance is there is little agreement about what it is. The usual “interpretations of probability” give very different accounts of chance and there is disagreement concerning which, if any, is capable ...
