Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Paranoid Transformer: Reading Narrative of Madness as Computational Approach to Creativity

open access: yesFuture Internet, 2020
This paper revisits the receptive theory in the context of computational creativity. It presents a case study of a Paranoid Transformer—a fully autonomous text generation engine with raw output that could be read as the narrative of a mad digital persona

Probability Guide to Gambling: The Mathematics of Dice, Slots, Roulette, Baccarat, Blackjack, Poker, Lottery and Sport Bets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Over the past two decades, gamblers have begun taking mathematics into account more seriously than ever before. While probability theory is the only rigorous theory modeling the uncertainty, even though in idealized conditions, numerical probabilities ...

Theoretical Analysis of Acceptance Rates in Multigrid Monte Carlo

open access: yes, 1991
We analyze the kinematics of multigrid Monte Carlo algorithms by investigating acceptance rates for nonlocal Metropolis updates. With the help of a simple criterion we can decide whether or not a multigrid algorithm will have a chance to overcome critial

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Can a Divinely Guided World Include Blind Chance?

open access: yesZygon
Compatibilism, or accommodationism, is the view that evolutionary theory and interventionist theism are compatible. According to compatibilists, God can guide the biosphere while allowing for chance events.

Light incoherence due to quantum-gravitational fluctuations of the background space

open access: yes, 2009
Based on the theory of mutual coherence of light from an extended incoherent quasi-monochromatic source (providing a basis of stellar interferometry) we estimate the degree of light incoherence due to quantum-gravitational fluctuations of the background ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Prospect theory-based formulation of chance constrained portfolio optimization problem using loan

open access: yesSICE Journal of Control, Measurement, and System Integration
Portfolio optimization that allows the borrowed money from a loan to be invested in risk assets has been formulated as a chance constrained problem. In this paper, in order to reflect investor preferences called “values” in the solution, or the portfolio,

«Theory of everything»: types of information and the theory of interpretation in «Philosophy of chance» by Stanisław Lem

open access: yesСемиотические исследования
The article is focused on the S. Lem’s perspective of the literary work as a product of the reader’s apprehension of the text in the culture discourse. The aim of the research is to describe the Lem’s view on the structure of the text; Lem’s encounter as
