An Investigation of the Damage Mechanism of Multilayer Liquid-Containing Protective Structure under Combined Blast Wave and Fragment Loading

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
A multilayer liquid-containing protective structure is composed of a liquid tank, ceramic, a honeycomb sandwich and homogeneous steel. This structure has superior resistance to combined blast wave and fragment loading.

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Oxygen-stripes in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 from ab initio calculations

open access: yes, 2003
We investigate the electronic, magnetic and orbital properties of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 perovskite by means of an ab initio electronic structure calculation within the Hartree-Fock approximation.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Local Thermometry of Neutral Modes on the Quantum Hall Edge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A system of electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can be tuned to create a gapped 2D system with one dimensional channels along the edge.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Anomalous Charge State Evolution and Its Control of Superconductivity in M3Al2C (M = Mo, W)

open access: yesiScience, 2020
Summary: The charge states of elements dictate the behavior of electrons and phonons in a lattice, either directly or indirectly. Here, we report the discovery of an anomalous charge state evolution in the superconducting M3Al2C (M = Mo, W) system, where

Numerical Model of Cloud-to-Ground Lightning for PyroCb Thunderstorms

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2023
This paper demonstrates a 2-D numerical model to represent two conceptual pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) thundercloud structures: i) tilted dipole and ii) tripole structure with enhanced lower positive charge layer, which are hypothesized to explain the ...
