Iron chelation

Blood Reviews, 1990
Adequate iron chelation in thalassaemia has resulted in a striking improvement in survival, with a reduction of cardiac mortality at age 15 years from 14-3%, and a predicted survival at age 36 years of 85%. Long term desferrioxamine (DF) therapy in thalassaemic children should be started between 2-4 years of age.

Chelating Agents

Chemotherapy, 2000
The antibacterial activity of metal ions, metal chelates, and molecules with chelating ability for polyvalent cations have been evaluated. The chelator N,N′-ethylenebis[2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-glycine] (EHPG) exerted moderate-to-good activity against isolates of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Other chelating agents such as ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (

Oral Iron Chelators

Annual Review of Medicine, 2009
Deferoxamine (DFO) was the standard of care for transfusional iron overload for >40 years, requiring subcutaneous infusion for 8–12 h/day, 5–7 days/week. Oral iron chelators are an important development, offering the potential to improve compliance and patients’ quality of life.

Phenylmercury chelates and chelated titanoxanes

Journal of the Less Common Metals, 1979
Abstract The reaction of phenylmercury hydroxide with chelating ligands such as salicylaldehyde, 8-hydroxyquinoline, benzoylphenyl hydroxylamine, 2-hydroxybenzophenones and some Schiff bases has been found to give chelated phenylmercury compounds.

[Chelation].

Revue francaise d'endodontie : publication officielle de la Societe francaise d'endodontie, 1992
The use of chelation in endodontics demands a knowledge of the workings of its physico-chemical process. To explain this, we must define unsaturated salts and contrast them with the complexes to which the chelates belong. A few examples of application illustrate these different properties especially the action of E.D.T.A.

Iron-Chelating Therapy

CRC Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 1988
Because of the catalytic action of iron in one-electron redox reactions, it has a key role in the formation of harmful oxygen derivatives and production of peroxidative damage to vital cellular structures. The clinical manifestations of iron overload may be prevented and even reversed by the effective administration of the iron-chelating drug ...

Misconception About Chelation

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1974
To the Editor. —A misconception about chelation has permeated much of the ophthalmological literature. EDTA has been used to chelate Ca ++ both in vitro and in vivo. Chelation of Ca ++ is of interest in ophthalmology because Ca ++ -dependent enzymes from bacteria, epithelium, or leukocytes may be important factors in the pathogenesis of corneal ulcers.
