Development of a rapid fractionation tool for natural organic matter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
A rapid natural organic matter (NOM) fractionation tool was developed to enable NOM to be classified by hydrophobicity at the water treatment works and in the catchment.

The electrophoretic membrane contactor: A mass-transfer-based methodology applied to the separation of whey proteins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In the electrophoretic membrane contactor (EMC), a porous membrane is used to establish a contact across two flowing liquids between which an electrically driven mass transfer takes places.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Carbon isotope effects in the sorption of chlorinated ethenes on biochar and activated carbon

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
As an alternative to activated carbon, biochar is a promising, environmentally friendly sorbent that can be used to remove organic groundwater pollutants, such as chlorinated ethenes (CEs).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Silicon Isotope Geochemistry: Fractionation Linked to Silicon Complexations and Its Geological Applications

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
The fundamental advances in silicon isotope geochemistry have been systematically demonstrated in this work. Firstly, the continuous modifications in analytical approaches and the silicon isotope variations in major reservoirs and geological processes ...

Barium isotopic fractionation during strong weathering of basalt in a tropical climate

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2020
Barium (Ba) is an element which is toxic to humans, plants, and animals. Deciphering the geochemical behavior of Ba in soils is fundamental for assessing the potentials risks posed by Ba. Ba isotopes are a potentially robust tracer of Ba in soils.

Effects of Temperature and Chemical Speciation of Mineral Elements on PM10 Formation during Zhundong Coal Combustion

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
Particulate matter (PM) pollution from coal combustion is a leading contributor to the influence of atmospheric visibility, photochemical smog, and even global climate.

A chemical study of carbon fractionation in external galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In the interstellar medium carbon exists in the form of two stable isotopes 12C and 13C and their ratio is a good indicator of nucleosynthesis in galaxies.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
