Experimental constraints on kinetic and equilibrium silicon isotope fractionation during the formation of non-biogenic chert deposits [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Silicon isotopic compositions (δ30Si) of modern and ancient siliceous sedimentary rocks provide valuable information on conditions in depositional environments, but interpretations are hampered by the lack of experimentally validated fractionation ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Chemical fractionation of nickel in asphaltite based bottom ash

open access: yes, 2013
Asphaltite, originating from petroleum, contains many kinds of mineral elements derived from its generation. These elements exist in different forms which may change throughout the asphaltite combustion process.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Manganese and zinc in acidic agricultural soils from Central Spain: Distribution and phytoavailability prediction with chemical extraction tests

open access: yes, 2009
The extractability and distribution of manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) were evaluated in acidic agricultural soils from Central Spain. Both single (0.1 M hydrochloride [HCl] and 0.05 M ethylenediaminetetraacetate [EDTA]) and sequential extraction procedures

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Properties of vegetable oils modified by hydrogenation, interesterification and fractionation

open access: yesGrasas y Aceites, 1992
The advent of techniques of chemical processing (hydrogenation and interesterification) and physical processing (fractionation) provides the manufacturer the capacity of modifying one or many physicochemical properties of an oil or fat.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Distribution of Phosphorus Forms Along the Altitude Gradient in the Soil of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau and the Influencing Factors

open access: yesAgronomy
Phosphorus (P) is a key limiting nutrient in alpine meadows. Analyzing the spatial distribution of soil P and its forms along altitudinal gradients is crucial to understand soil nutrient cycling and sustain productivity under climate change.
