The skin and each of the connective tissues of the chest wall may develop malignant disease, each appropriate to the particular tissue. Treatment is as for any other area, and it is only when surgical management results in a defect or impairment of the mechanics of the chest wall that this becomes a specialist chest problem.

Primary chest wall tumors consist of 5% of all thoracic tumors and 0.04% of all primary tumors. Almost half of primary chest wall tumors are benign. Over half are metastases from distant malignancies or direct invasions from adjacent malignancies such as breast cancer, lung cancer, mesothelioma and mediastinal tumor.

[Chest wall reconstruction after resection of chest wall tumors].

Between 1994 and 2012, chest wall resection and reconstruction were performed 15 patients (16 cases) with primary chest wall tumors, metastatic tumors. and chest wall recurrence of breast carcinoma. In all the patients, reconstruction of the chest wall was performed using layers of polypropylene Marlex mesh sheets.
