Susceptibility of Chickens to Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) Viruses of Wild Bird– and Poultry–Associated Subtypes

open access: yesViruses, 2019
Analysis of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses circulating in the Netherlands in a previous study revealed associations of specific hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes with wild bird or poultry hosts.

Targeted gene knockout in chickens mediated by TALENs

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2014
Significance Targeted gene knockout by editing specific loci in genome has revolutionized the field of functional genomics. Transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) are representative next-generation platforms for customized genomic ...

Acacetin reduces endoplasmic reticulum stress through the P‐eNOS/PERK signaling pathway to attenuate MGO‐induced vascular endothelial cell dysfunction

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated a potential protective effect of acacetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, against methylglyoxal (MGO)‐induced endothelial dysfunction in human umbilical vein endothelial cells and its mechanism of action. Acacetin can could inhibit MGO‐induced intracellular calcium ion influx, enhance the expression levels of phosphorylated ...

Using ancient DNA to study the origins and dispersal of ancestral Polynesian chickens across the Pacific

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2014
Significance Ancient DNA sequences from chickens provide an opportunity to study their human-mediated dispersal across the Pacific due to the significant genetic diversity and range of archaeological material available.

Characterisation of the role played by ELMO1, GPR141 and the intergenic polymorphism rs918980 in Fuchs' dystrophy in the Indian population

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study reports the upregulation of ELMO1 and GPR141 in human Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) corneal endothelium and ultraviolet A‐induced FECD mice model. A genetic association of an intergenic single nucleotide polymorphism rs918980 present between both genes is observed with FECD in the Indian population.

Effects of probiotic-supplemented diets on growth performance and intestinal immune characteristics of broiler chickens.

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2013
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a probiotic product incorporating Lactobacillus fermentum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the growth performance and intestinal immune status in broiler chickens.

Alkane biosynthesis gene expression and its increased production in recombinant cyanobacteria

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The transcription and mRNA structures of the alkane biosynthesis genes ado/aar were analysed in the representative cyanobacteria PCC 6803 and SK1‐2‐1, which produce C17H36 and C15H32, respectively. PCC 6803 transconjugants carrying these genes showed a 1.8‐ to 2.3‐fold increase in C17H36 production.

Distribution of a Non-parametric Wavelet-based Statistic for Functional Data [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Mathematical formulations and proofs for a wavelet based statistic employed in functional data analysis is elaborately discussed in this report. The propositions and derivations discussed here apply to a wavelet based statistic with hard thresholding. The proposed analytic distribution is made feasible only due to the assumption of normality. Chimeric Chickens and Their Use in Manipulation of the Chicken Genome

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1993
Germline chimeric chickens can be made by injecting dispersed cells from Stage X blastoderms into recipient embryos at an equivalent stage of development. Colonization of the chimera by donor-derived cells is facilitated when the recipient embryo is compromised by exposure to irradiation prior to injection of the donor cells.

Backyard chickens in the United States: a survey of flock owners.

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2014
Although it has become increasingly popular to keep backyard chickens in the United States, few studies have provided information about these flocks. An online survey of backyard chicken owners was conducted, advertised through Master Gardeners' websites,
