Temporal Expression Patterns of Clock Genes and Aquaporin 5/Anoctamin 1 in Rat Submandibular Gland Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2017
Circadian rhythms are essential for health and regulate various physiological functions. These rhythms are regulated by a negative-feedback loop involving clock genes in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and peripheral tissues.

Single-channel recordings from cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
We have applied patch-clamp techniques to on-cell and excised-membrane patches from human retinal pigment epithelial cells in tissue culture. Single-channel currents from at least four ion channel types were observed: three or more potassium-selective ...

Tuning the Electronic Structure and Spin State of Fe─N─C Catalysts Using an Axial Oxygen Ligand and Fe Clusters for High‐Efficiency Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A FeN4─O/Clu@NC‐0.1Ac catalyst containing atomically‐dispersed FeN4─O sites (medium‐spin Fe2+) and Fe clusters delivered a half‐wave potential of 0.89 V for ORR and an overpotential of 330 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for OER in 0.1 m KOH. When the catalyst was used in a rechargeable Zn–air battery, a power density of 284.5 mW cm−2 was achieved with excellent ...

Early history of glycine receptor biology in mammalian spinal cord circuits

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2010
In this review we provide an overview of key in vivo experiments, undertaken in the cat spinal cord in the 1950s and 1960s, and point out their contributions to our present understanding of glycine receptor (GlyR) function.

Single Solid‐State Ion Channels as Potentiometric Nanosensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single gold nanopores functionalized with mixed self‐assembled monolayers act as solid‐state ion channels for direct, selective potentiometric sensing of inorganic ions (Ag⁺). The design overcomes key miniaturization barriers of conventional ion‐selective electrodes by combining low resistivity with suppressed loss of active components, enabling robust

An Evaluation of the Effects of Dredging Within the Arkansas River Navigation System - Volume I - Introduction, Summary and Conclusions, and Recommendations [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
The foundation for the development of the Arkansas River was laid with the authorization of many upstream reservoirs in the comprehensive River and Harbor Act of 1946 signed by President Truman.

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Method and apparatus for convection control of metallic halide vapor density in a metallic halide laser [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
An apparatus is disclosed in which a reservoir containing copper chloride is heated so that the copper chloride is maintained in a liquid form. The apparatus includes a means for flowing a buffer gas (which in the exemplary embodiment is neon) over the ...

Solar Heating Enhanced Selective Recovery of Metal Ions Through Flowing Electrodes Enabled by Hybrid Carbon Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new electrochemical system based on a microporous hybrid of carbon nanoplatelets and nanotubes to selectively capture Ni2+ from wastewater is constructed. The system temperature rises rapidly when irradiated with sunlight, which enhances the Ni2+ removal rate by 250% and the selectivity by 53%, and the energy consumption is also reduced by 51 ...

Microfluidic systems for in situ formation of nylon 6,6 membranes.

open access: yes, 2006
A microfluidics based, localised formation of nylon 6,6 membranes has been undertaken. The study demonstrates the feasibility of maintaining stable aqueous/organic interfaces for xylene within simple linear flow channels. Glass fabricated structures were
