Why is LDL‐cholesterol bad cholesterol?

Lipid Technology, 2008
AbstractThe high circulating LDL‐cholesterol levels seen in the inherited disease familial hypercholesterolaemia cause high rates of cardiovascular disease whereas the low circulating LDL‐cholesterol levels following statin treatment cause low rates of cardiovascular disease.

Measurement of Total Cholesterol, HDL-Cholesterol, and LDL-Cholesterol

Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 1989
Plasma concentrations of LDL and HDL are generally measured in terms of their cholesterol content. This requires the separation of the appropriate lipoprotein-containing fractions. The separation and measurement of each fraction are described.

Precipitation methods for the determination of LDL-cholesterol

Clinical Biochemistry, 1985
The selective precipitation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) with polyvinyl sulfate (PVS), and the immunoprecipitation of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) with an anti-HDL antibody, can both be used to establish simple methods for the determination of LDL cholesterol.

LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol or triglycerides—which is the culprit?

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2003
Dyslipidaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes commonly consists of elevated triglyceride levels; normal or slightly elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol levels with a preponderance of small, dense LDL particles; and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels with a preponderance of small, dense HDL.

The FASEB Journal, 1995
age, and its metabolism to bile acids, their interests would represent only a small fraction of the overall attention that has been given to this sterol. The major focus on cholesterol by both the medical research community and the lay public is because it is the central feature of two major afflictions, atherosclerosis and gallstones.

Statins and LDL‐cholesterol lowering: an overview

Current Medical Research and Opinion, 2005
Statins have become a cornerstone of treatment for dyslipidaemia primarily due to their marked lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Studies show that statin treatment typically reduces relative risk of cardiovascular disease by 24-37%, regardless of age, sex, prior history of coronary heart disease (CHD), or other co-morbid ...
