Cholesterol Synthesis Inhibitors in Cholesterol Gallstone Disease

Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1996
Cholesterol synthesis inhibitors (HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors) are reported to decrease cholesterol saturation index of duodenal bile in hypercholesterolaemic subjects. The dissolution of gallstones in animals on treatment with these drugs created expectations of a therapeutical role for these drugs in cholesterol gallstone disease.

Dietary cholesterol, membrane cholesterol and cholesterol synthesis

Biochimie, 1991
After describing the main steps of cholesterol biosynthesis the author recalls that the cholesterogenesis rate is feedback-inhibited by dietary cholesterol and examines the various processes of modulation. Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG) CoA reductase, the key rate-limiting enzyme, is a 97 kDa endoplasmic reticulum glycoprotein, anchored 7-fold in this ...

Inhibition of Cholesterol Synthesis

The Journal of Nutrition, 1987
Efforts to find inhibitors of cholesterol synthesis, which might act as hypocholesterolemic agents, have been going on for over 30 yr. One difficulty with this approach is that we are dealing with an integral metabolite rather than a foreign substance. It is thought that the ideal place for inhibition of synthesis would be a water-soluble intermediate ...

Towards the Synthesis of Cholesterol

Nature, 1947
NO development of organic chemistry or of biochemistry has unfolded in a more dramatic manner in recent years than that concerned with the nature and functions of the steroids, the bile acids, and the related vitamins and hormones.

THE SYNTHESIS OF CHOLESTEROL GLUCOPYRANOSIDURONATE

Canadian Journal of Biochemistry, 1966
Cholesterol glucopyranosiduronate was synthesized by the hydrolysis of cholesterol methyl triacetyl glucopyranosiduronate with barium hydroxide under mild conditions. Some of its properties were investigated.

Cholesterol Synthesis Disorders

2014
Cholesterol has several essential functions in normal cell physiology. In addition to being a major component of cellular membranes, cholesterol serves as the precursor of bile acids and steroid hormones and plays an important role in embryonic development.

Cholesterol synthesis inhibitors inhibit more than cholesterol synthesis.

Kidney international. Supplement, 1994
The beneficial effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibition in models of progressive glomerular injury may not all be due to reductions in circulating lipoproteins and decreases in glomerular lipoprotein deposition. Indeed, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors may have direct effects on glomerular mesangial cells that could explain the amelioration of renal injury.

Cholesterol Synthesis Defects

2018
The phenotype of some inborn errors of cholesterol biosynthesis may present with symptoms suggestive of adrenal or gonadal steroid disorders. An overview of cholesterol biosynthesis is presented with more in-depth coverage of two disorders in which a urine steroid profile can play a role in the diagnosis: cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase deficiency and ...
