Chondrocyte Proliferation and Differentiation
2011The skeletal elements of the axial and appendicular skeleton are preformed as cartilage templates by a mechanism called endochondral ossification. During this process, a cartilage template is formed in which chondrocytes proliferate and differentiate into hypertrophic chondrocytes and are gradually replaced by bone.

We have little systematic information to explain the heterogeneity of cartilage and bones as tissue, or of chondrocytes and osteocytes as differentiated cells. Does heterogeneity originate in the initial determination or setting-aside of precursor cells for chondrogenesis or is it an aspect of later stages of chondrocyte differentiation?

Autologous Chondrocyte Transplantation
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1999The intrinsic capacity of cartilage to repair chondral injuries is poor. Different techniques to induce cartilage repair with the use of extrinsic chondrogeneic cell sources have been explored in experimental models. Cells can be harvested autologously or as allografts from a healthy part of the donor tissue, isolated, expanded in vitro, and finally ...

Autologous Chondrocyte Transplantation: Chondrocyte Culturing and Clinical Aspects
1998The high clinical and socio-economical impact of cartilage defects and chondral degeneration is well known. After trauma or without known ethiology, young patients often suffer from pain and loss of function leading to a decrease in physical activity and, which is more severe, to long-term disability and unemployment.
