Salicylic Acid Biosynthesis and Metabolism: A Divergent Pathway for Plants and Bacteria
Salicylic acid (SA) is an active secondary metabolite that occurs in bacteria, fungi, and plants. SA and its derivatives (collectively called salicylates) are synthesized from chorismate (derived from shikimate pathway).

Expression of Bacterial Chorismate Pyruvate-Lyase in Tobacco: Evidence for the Presence of Chorismate in the Plant Cytosol [PDF]
The bacterial gene ubiC encodes chorismate pyruvate-lyase, an enzyme which converts chorismate to 4-hydroxybenzoate and which is not normally present in plants. The UbiC protein was expressed in tobacco, with targeting of the gene product either to the plastids or to the cytosol.

Metabolic engineering of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 for the production of para-hydroxy benzoic acid
para-hydroxy benzoic acid (PHBA) is the key component for preparing parabens, a common preservatives in food, drugs and personal care products, as well as high performance bioplastics such as liquid crystal polymers (LCP).

Chorismate synthase from Staphylococcus aureus [PDF]
The aroC gene encoding chorismate synthase and the ndk gene encoding nucleoside diphosphate kinase (Ndk) were cloned from Staphylococcus aureus. DNA sequencing suggests that aroC is located in an operon with aroB and aroA and encodes a protein of 388 amino acids with 61% identity to the aroF gene product of Bacillus subtilis. The ndk gene of S.

Meloidogyne javanica Chorismate Mutase 1 Alters Plant Cell Development
Root-knot nematodes are obligate plant parasites that alter plant cell growth and development by inducing the formation of giant cells for feeding. Nematodes inject secretions from their esophageal glands through their stylet and into plant cells to ...

Engineering sorghum for higher 4-hydroxybenzoic acid content
Engineering bioenergy crops to accumulate coproducts in planta can increase the value of lignocellulosic biomass and enable a sustainable bioeconomy. In this study, we engineered sorghum with a bacterial gene encoding a chorismate pyruvate-lyase (ubiC ...

Plants strike back: Kiwellin proteins as a modular toolbox for plant defense mechanisms
Plants have to cope with numerous stresses in nature to avoid damage or cell death. We recently reported a class of plant defense proteins termed kiwellins that were initially found in kiwifruit and shown to be causative to human food allergies.

Hybrid RHF/MP2 geometry optimizations with the effective fragment molecular orbital method.
The frozen domain effective fragment molecular orbital method is extended to allow for the treatment of a single fragment at the MP2 level of theory. The approach is applied to the conversion of chorismate to prephenate by Chorismate Mutase, where the ...
