Bose gas: Theory and Experiment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
For many years, $^4$He typified Bose-Einstein superfluids, but recent advances in dilute ultra-cold alkali-metal gases have provided new neutral superfluids that are particularly tractable because the system is dilute.

Multi‐Frequency Electrocochleography Results in Fewer Drop Alarms During Cochlear Implant Insertion

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
A novel multi‐frequency electrocochleography (ECochG) algorithm used during cochlear implant electrode insertion is associated with fewer drop alarms and an increase in optimal insertion track patterns. Multi‐frequency ECochG may provide a more accurate assessment of the cochlear microenvironment when compared to single‐frequency ECochG.

Documented End‐of‐Life Preferences of People With Parkinson's Disease or Parkinsonism Across Europe

open access: yesMovement Disorders Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonism are characterized by motor and non‐motor symptoms. As the disease advances, planning for end‐of‐life (EoL) care becomes increasingly important. However, consensus‐based European guidelines for advance care planning and documentation of EoL care preferences for parkinsonism are lacking ...

A combination of a cell penetrating peptide and a protein translation inhibitor kills metastatic breast cancer cells

open access: yesCell Death Discovery, 2023
Cell Penetrating Peptides (CPPs) are promising anticancer and antimicrobial drugs. We recently reported that a peptide derived from the human mitochondrial/ER membrane-anchored NEET protein, Nutrient Autophagy Factor 1 (NAF-1; NAF-144-67), selectively ...

Beyond the Chart: The use of Satellite Remote Sensing for Assessing the Adequacy and Completeness Information [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Chart adequacy and completeness information consists of the symbols, abbreviations and warnings used to inform mariners of the level of confidence that should be given to data on a nautical chart.

Von Neumann rho invariants and torsion in the topological knot concordance group

open access: yes, 2012
We discuss an infinite class of metabelian Von Neumann rho-invariants. Each one is a homomorphism from the monoid of knots to the real line. In general they are not well defined on the concordance group.

Voice and Speech in Atypical Parkinsonian Disorders

open access: yesMovement Disorders Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Background Motor speech disorders are early, common, and functionally limiting features of atypical parkinsonian disorders (APDs) such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal syndrome (CBS), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). These impairments are underrecognized and undertreated in neurology clinics.

Christopher Alexander’s Theory of Wholeness as a Tetrad of Creative Activity: The Examples of A New Theory of Urban Design and The Nature of Order

open access: yesUrban Science, 2019
To identify and evaluate architect Christopher Alexander’s theory of wholeness, this article draws on the work of British philosopher J.G. Bennett, who developed a conceptual method—what he called systematics—to clarify phenomena by ...
