Experimental analysis of the resistance of Paramecium caudatum (ciliophora) against infection by bacterium Holospora undulata

European Journal of Protistology, 1997
Summary In some clones of Paramecium caudatum (to be referred to as “resistant”) infectious forms of Holospora undulata bacteria which are capable of infecting the micronucleus were lysed within 3–4 h after invasion of the micronucleus. After microsurgical transplantation of the micronucleus of non-resistant into resistant paramecia (without ...

CpG-ODN increases resistance of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) against Philasterides dicentrarchi (Ciliophora: Scuticociliatia) infection

Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2009
Unmethylated cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) dinucleotides flanked by specific bases in bacterial DNA induce a favorable immune response by acting as danger signals to the host. Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides containing CpG motifs (CpG-ODNs) also act like the unmethylated CpG oligonucleotides in bacterial DNA.

Trichodinid (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) Infections in Perch (Perca fluviatilis) Experimentally Exposed to Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents

Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2011
Wild-caught European perch (Perca fluviatilis) were exposed in the laboratory to untreated bleached pulp and paper mill effluent in two separate experiments. The first experiment was conducted at 7-8°C using effluent concentrations of 5 and 10%, and the second experiment was conducted at ambient river temperature of 4-20°C using an effluent ...

Morphological redescription and molecular characterization of Trichodina matsu Basson & Van As, 1994 (Ciliophora, Mobilida, Trichodinidae) infecting Tachysurus fulvidraco (Richardson, 1846) from Chongqing, China

Zootaxa, 2021
During a survey of parasitic ciliates in Chongqing, China, Trichodina matsu Basson & Van As, 1994 was isolated from gills of Tachysurus fulvidraco. Furthermore, the 18S rRNA gene and ITS-5.8S rRNA region of T. matsu were sequenced for the first time and applied for the species identification and comparison with similar species in the present study.

Infection of the western treehole mosquito, Aedes sierrensis (Diptera: Culicidae), with Lambornella clarki (Ciliophora: Tetrahymenidae)

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1985
Abstract Lambornella clarki was a common parasite of Aedes sierrensis immatures collected from treeholes in Mendocino County, California, in 1982–1983. The ciliate was not found in mosquitoes from treeholes with water having the most extreme values of electrical conductivity ( 1.74 mmhos/cm) and pH ( 7.7).

Immobilization antigen-independent protection of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) against Philasterides dicentrarchi (Ciliophora: Scuticociliatia) infection

Aquaculture, 2008
To determine whether olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) immunized with lysate of Philasterides dicentrarchi could be protected immobilization antigen (i-antigen) type independently, fish were immunized with lysate of ciliates obtained from in vitro cultures or ciliates obtained from infected fish.

Peracetic acid treatment of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ciliophora: Ichthyophthiriidae) and Trichodina spp. reduces the infection by Aeromonas hydrophila and improves survival in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Aquaculture, 2021
Abstract Co-infections with ectoparasites and bacteria commonly occur in fish farms and are associated with high mortality. In March 2020, a private Nile tilapia (Oreochromus niloticus) farm in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, experienced high fish mortality, and the clinically diseased fish were characterized by lethargy, abnormal swimming behavior, loss

A House for Two—Double Bacterial Infection in Euplotes woodruffi Sq1 (Ciliophora, Euplotia) Sampled in Southeastern Brazil

Microbial Ecology, 2015
Several ciliated protists form symbiotic associations with a diversity of microorganisms, leading to drastic impact on their ecology and evolution. In this work, two Euplotes spp. sampled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were identified based on morphological and molecular features as Euplotes woodruffi strain Sq1 and E.

Infections of Stentor roeseli and S. polymorphus (Ciliophora, Heterotrichida) by microsporidia

Parasitology Research, 1987
In cells of the ciliated protozoa Stentor polymorphus and S. roeseli, infections by microsporidia were observed. In both stentors, the microsporidia were maintained in the laboratory and new cells could be infected when transferred to a culture of parasitized cells. The parasites were more pathogenic on S. roeseli than on S.

Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora): primary infection in thick‐lipped mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso)

Journal of Fish Diseases, 1995
Abstract. Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora), isolated from the reef fish, Grammistes sexlineatus Thumberg, was established as primary infections in mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso). Only a small percentage (<22%) of exposed theronts established infection under controlled conditions. This is discussed in relation to the probability of host parasite
