Antibiotic Remodeling of the Gut Microbiota Impairs Host Resistance to Secondary Infection

open access: yesiMetaMed, EarlyView.
Gut microbial dynamics induced by four antibiotics, revealed distinct taxonomic and functional shifts. Vancomycin‐perturbed bacteriomes were proven to promote pathogen resistance to antibiotic treatment. Metronidazole‐treated mice showed pronounced Salmonella translocation to hepatic tissue, and altered Enterococcus avium populations modulated host ...

Evaluation of Resistance to Ciprofloxacin and Identification of Mutations in Topoisomerase Genes in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia Isolated from Pediatric Urinary Tract Infections

open access: yes, 2019
Aim:Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the common infectious diseases of children. Due to the limited use of fluoroquinolones in children, they still have no resistance problems as seen in the adult population.

Genomic epidemiology and lineage‐specific risk stratification of tet(X4)‐mediated tigecycline resistance along the pork production chain: A One Health perspective

open access: yesiMetaOmics, EarlyView.
Genome surveillance across a swine‐associated One Health continuum in China shows that slaughterhouses act as major enrichment nodes for tet(X4)‐mediated tigecycline resistance, driven by putative clonal transmission and stable plasmid backbones. Integrating global datasets enables lineage‐specific risk stratification, highlighting key control points ...

Potentiation of ciprofloxacin action against Gram-negative\ud bacterial biofilms by a nitroxide

open access: yes, 2015
We previously showed that soluble nitroxides (nitric oxide analogues) mimicked the well-established ability of nitric oxide to cause biofilm dispersal and further showed that these compounds could prevent biofilm formation.

On‐site pilot‐scale advanced oxidation pretreatment of hospital wastewater: assessment of pharmaceuticals, pathogens, antibiotic resistance genes and acute ecotoxicity

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Technology &Biotechnology, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Hospital premises generate wastewater containing a wide spectrum of contaminants, such as pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogenic microorganisms, whilst plenty of them are classified under the antibiotic resistant bacteria (ΑRΒ) category.

A case report of Peutz–Jeghers syndrome in a child with Crohn's disease

open access: yesJPGN Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Peutz–Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by hamartomatous polyps and mucocutaneous hyperpigmented freckles, whereas Crohn's disease (CD) is a condition characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation. Here, we present a rare case report of an 11‐year‐old male who presented with both CD and PJS.

Detecting Antibiotic Resistance in Strains of Selected Gram‐Negative Bacterial Species Using Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectroscopy successfully identified antibiotic‐resistant Gram‐negative strains. Resistant strains of four bacterial species were discriminated from sensitive ones with 99.1% accuracy using PLS regression. The method allows for rapid, label‐free detection of antibiotic resistance.
