The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Definitions of the circular economy: Circularity matters

open access: yesEcological Economics, 2023
With more than 4,000 research articles in 2022 the Circular Economy is clearly a topic that meets academic interest. With resource use at an all-time, unsustainable peak it is also a topic that raises great expectations: We need the circular economy. The great hopes that we all have are further fueled by the definitions of the circular economy that we ...

Plasma extrachromosomal circular DNA as a biomarker in EGFR‐targeted therapy of non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Detection of extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) in plasma samples from EGFR‐mutated non‐small cell lung cancer patients. Plasma was collected before and during treatment with the EGFR‐tyrosine kinase inhibitor osimertinib. Plasma eccDNA was detected in all cancer samples, and the presence of the EGFR gene on eccDNA serves as a potential biomarker ...

Food Security and Circular Cities: Paradigmatic Shifts, Geographical and Temporal Scales, and Participatory Governance Support to Facilitate Transitions Towards ‘Urban Sustainability’

open access: yesUrban Science
This article explores how the principles of circularity, applied to urban food systems, could contribute to catalysing a transition towards more sustainable cities, working on the premise that food security is a key pillar of urban resilience.

Detection of circulating tumor DNA in colorectal cancer patients using a methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed a cost‐effective methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex assay containing tissue‐conserved and tumor‐specific methylation markers. The assay can detect circulating tumor DNA with high accuracy in patients with localized and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Perspectives in educating molecular pathologists on liquid biopsy: Toward integrative, equitable, and decentralized precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive, real‐time molecular profiling through analysis of circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. This Perspective highlights the importance of training pathologists through integrative educational programs, such as the European Masters in Molecular Pathology, to ensure effective and equitable implementation of ...

Interim tandems of life cycle assessment methods and circularity indicators—elaboration for the circular bio-economy

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainability
IntroductionThe transition toward a circular economy (CE) is a key strategy for sustainable production and consumption, yet its contribution to sustainability depends on how it is assessed.

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.
