Multisymplectic formulation of fluid dynamics using the inverse map [PDF]
We construct multisymplectic formulations of fluid dynamics using the inverse of the Lagrangian path map. This inverse map, the ‘back-to-labels’ map, gives the initial Lagrangian label of the fluid particle that currently occupies each Eulerian position.

Single-layer Axisymmetric Model for a Hadley Circulation with Parameterized Eddy Momentum Forcing
An axisymmetric single-layer model is used to study interactions of the Hadley circulation with extratropical eddies. Eddy momentum fluxes are parameterized using a simple closure motivated by calculations with an idealized dry general circulation model (

Effects of Salinity Variability on Recent El Niño Events
Ocean salinity variability provides a new way to study the evolution of the the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Comparisons between the salinity variation and related processes responsible for sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) were ...

Fluid circulation driven by collectively organized metachronal waves in swimming T. aceiti nematodes [PDF]
Recent experiments have shown that the nematode {\it T. aceti} can assemble into collectively undulating groups at the edge of fluid drops. This coordinated state consists of metachronal waves and drives fluid circulation inside the drop. We find that the circulation velocity is about 2 mm/s and nearly half the speed of the metachronal wave. We develop

Fluid Dynamic Relationships Involved in Circulation Cleaning
Abstract Removal of milk deposits on metal pipes using only fluid flow, without benefit of detergent materials, was studied. Soil removal rate was linear at flow rates between 4,000 and 30,000 kg/hour, representing Reynolds Numbers of from 85,000 to 600,000, demonstrating that cleaning effectiveness steadily improved as the pumping rate increased. Use

Si3N4 and Si3N4/SiC composite rings for dynamic sealing of circulating fluids [PDF]
Abstract Silicon nitride (Si3N4) and silicon nitride/silicon carbide (Si3N4/30 wt.% SiC) seal rings were tested as self-mated pairs and dissimilar sealing systems against grey cast iron. The tribological experiments were conducted in a ring-on-ring tribometer at V≈4 m s−1 of linear speed, in the range of 0.3–1 kN of applied load, under a pressure of ...

Hamiltonian approach to hybrid plasma models [PDF]
The Hamiltonian structures of several hybrid kinetic-fluid models are identified explicitly, upon considering collisionless Vlasov dynamics for the hot particles interacting with a bulk fluid.

New conserved vorticity integrals for moving surfaces in multi-dimensional fluid flow [PDF]
For inviscid fluid flow in any n-dimensional Riemannian manifold, new conserved vorticity integrals generalizing helicity, enstrophy, and entropy circulation are derived for lower-dimensional surfaces that move along fluid streamlines. Conditions are determined for which the integrals yield constants of motion for the fluid.
