Citrinin mycotoxin recognition and removal by naked magnetic nanoparticles [PDF]
Citrinin is a nephrotoxic mycotoxin which can be synthesized by Monascus mold during the fermentation process in foods. Monascus, generally described as red mold, is a red-pigmented filamentous fungus attracting a great interest for the production of ...

FOLLOWING upon the development of a new structural formula for citrinin described in a communication1 submitted to Nature on March 17, 1948, we have now been able to effect a synthesis of citrinin, thereby confirming our earlier deductions.

Antiprotozoal activity in citrinin
Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1976Citrinin has an inhibitory effect on growth of T. pyriformis. Citrinin also caused a shift to smaller cell size, particularly at the higher concentrations (25, 50 and 100 mug/ml). The mycotoxin exerted only a marginal effect on the respiration of T. pyriformis; but citrinin (25 mug/ml) induced an inhibitory effect on DNA, RNA and protein content.

Production of citrinin-free Monascus pigments by submerged culture at low pH
Microbial fermentation of citrinin-free Monascus pigments is of great interest to meet the demand of food safety. In the present work, the effect of various nitrogen sources, such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), cornmeal, (NH4)(2)SO4, and NaNO3, on ...

Interaction of citrinin and ochratoxin A
Natural Toxins, 1994AbstractThe mycotoxins citrinin and ochratoxin A are produced in common by some molds and have been found together in a number of foods and animal feeds. We used in vitro tests to determine if the Same effects are produced by these two mycotoxins when they act both independently and together.

Citrinin mycotoxicosis in the rabbit
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 1983In three trials, single or multiple doses of citrinin dissolved in 0.5 N-NaOH and adjusted to neutral pH with HCl were given to rabbits by either the oral or intraperitoneal route. The 72-hr LD50 was 50 mg/kg body weight by intraperitoneal administration and 134 mg/kg by the oral route.

Citrinin mycotoxicosis in the mouse
Food and Cosmetics Toxicology, 1977Abstract Citrinin was mixed in a purified diet for feeding to mice or was dissolved in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or in equal parts of dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) and 50% ethanol (EtOH) for administration by the ip, sc and oral routes. The single-dose LD 50 values determined in male mice at 72 hr for citrinin dissolved in DMSO-50%EtOH were 58, 73 and 112

Citrinin, a nephrotoxic mycotoxin, has been of growing importance also for the "International Agency for Research on Cancer", ever since its presumable role in the occurrence of Balcan endemic nephropathy (BEN) was discussed at the congress on "Mycotoxins, Endemic Nepthropathy and Urinary Tract Tumours" held in Lyon in June 1991 (12).

Mycotoxin Research, 2001
Despite the wide distribution of citrinin-producingPenicillium spp. there are only rare reports about the occurence of this mycotoxin in foodstuffs. Particularly, the discrepancy between the common detection of the applerotting fungusP expansum and the complete lack of data about the occurrence of citrinin in apple-based foods is noteworthy.
