Antiprotozoal activity in citrinin
Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1976Citrinin has an inhibitory effect on growth of T. pyriformis. Citrinin also caused a shift to smaller cell size, particularly at the higher concentrations (25, 50 and 100 mug/ml). The mycotoxin exerted only a marginal effect on the respiration of T. pyriformis; but citrinin (25 mug/ml) induced an inhibitory effect on DNA, RNA and protein content.

Citrinin mycotoxicosis in the rabbit
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 1983In three trials, single or multiple doses of citrinin dissolved in 0.5 N-NaOH and adjusted to neutral pH with HCl were given to rabbits by either the oral or intraperitoneal route. The 72-hr LD50 was 50 mg/kg body weight by intraperitoneal administration and 134 mg/kg by the oral route.

The biosynthetic pathway to citrinin is elucidated by incorporation studies with advanced precursors; the first step of biosynthesis involves methylation of a pentaketide, followed by cyclization, reduction to the ketoaldehyde and then to the hydroxyaldehyde, dehydration, and finally oxidation of the methyl group at C(7) to a carboxy-group.

Citrinin mycotoxicosis in beagle dogs
Food and Cosmetics Toxicology, 1974Abstract Three trials were completed in which young beagle dogs were either fed a citrinin-containing culture of Penicillium citrinum (Trial I) or were administered pure citrinin either ip (Trial II) or orally (Trial III). Dogs fed the fungal culture and those given 20 or 40 mg pure citrinin/kg body weight developed renal disease.

Citrinin mycotoxicosis in the guinea-pig
Food and Cosmetics Toxicology, 1977Abstract Citrinin was dissolved in dimethylsulphoxide-ethanol solution and administered daily for 14 days by gastric intubation to young male and female guinea-pigs. Under these conditions, the LD 50 of citrinin was 43 mg/kg/day for both sexes. Loss of body weight was the most consistent clinical feature of citrinin toxicity.
