REACTION OF CULTIVATED CEREALS TO CLAVICEPS PURPUREA

Canadian Journal of Plant Science, 1976
The influence of inoculum concentration on the reaction induced in species and cultivars of commercial cereals by two isolates of ergot (Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul.) was investigated. Differences were observed among and within species with respect to each of the three components of the disease reaction, i.e., frequency of sclerotia, size of ...

INFECTION OF BARLEY BY CLAVICEPS PURPUREA

Canadian Journal of Botany, 1958
The development of infection of the ovary of Newal barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) by the ergot fungus, Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul., was traced from the time of inoculation until formation of the sclerotia. Penetration took place within 24 hours near the base of the ovule.

Sclerotium size and germination in Claviceps purpurea

Transactions of the British Mycological Society, 1966
The relationship between the size of the Sclerotium and its behaviour during germination was investigated. Large sclerotia showed higher percentage germination levels at any given time during germination and gave rise to taller clavae than did smaller ones.

Cytochrome P-450 and Alkaloid Synthesis in Claviceps Purpurea

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1970
Tryptophan, 4-dimethylallyltryptophan, and various analogs of tryptophan were investigated for their effect on binding to cytochrome P-450 and on cytochrome P-450 and total alkaloid levels in Claviceps purpurea. These compounds were shown not to affect cytochrome P-450 levels, in contrast to phenobarbital which increased the levels, but rather ...

Epigenetic modification enhances ergot alkaloid production of Claviceps purpurea

Biotechnology Letters, 2019
To enhance ergot alkaloid production of Claviceps purpurea Cp-1 strain by epigenetic modification approach. The chemical epigenetic modifiers were screened to promote ergot alkaloid production of the Cp-1 strain. The histone deacetylase inhibitor suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) was found to significantly enhance the alkaloid productivity of the ...

Proteinases of various Claviceps purpurea strains.

Biomedica biochimica acta, 1987
Extra- and intracellular proteinases from various Claviceps purpurea strains grown in submerged culture have been studied. A maximum level of intracellular proteinases was observed on the 6th day of culture growth, whereas extracellular activity continued to increase throughout the culture growth. Proteinases were purified and characterized.

Transformation of Claviceps purpurea using a bleomycin resistance gene

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 1989
To develop a DNA-mediated transformation system for Claviceps purpurea a vector was constructed using a bleomycin-resistance gene (bleoR) fused in frame to the Aspergillus nidulans trp C promoter as a dominant selection marker. The construct was shown to be functional in Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus niger and used to transform a wild strain of ...

Development of stromata in Claviceps purpurea

Transactions of the British Mycological Society, 1968
Observations on the development of Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul. stromata showed that extension growth occurred only at the stalk apex. The rate of stalk elongation was greater in darkness than in diurnal conditions or continuous light and positive phototropic alignment of the clavae involved enhanced extension growth of hyphae on the shaded side of ...

Resistance to Claviceps purpurea in Spring and Durum Wheat

Nature, 1970
THE ergot fungus, Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul., is common on cereals and grasses throughout the temperate regions of North America1,2. It is often severe on rye (Secale cereale L.) and durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and in recent years it has also been troublesome on Triticale (Triticum sp. × S.

ESTIMATION OF ERGOT ALKALOIDS IN CULTURES OF CLAVICEPS PURPUREA

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1959
Methods for estimating the content of ergot alkaloids in cultures of Claviceps purpurea have been examined to select a simple but reliable assay procedure for evaluating the effects of cultural conditions and strain differences on yield. Modification of a solvent extraction method used for ergot sclerotia gave the most satisfactory results ...
