Probabilistic forecasting of the clear-sky index using Markov-chain mixture distribution and copula models [PDF]

open access: yes2019 IEEE 46th Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC), 2019
Two probabilistic forecasting models for the clear-sky index, based on the Markov-chain mixture distribution (MCM) and copula clear-sky index generators, are presented and evaluated. In terms of performance, these models are compared with two benchmark models: a Quantile Regression (QR) model and the Persistence Ensemble (PeEn).

Simulating Dispersed Photovoltaic Power Generation Using a Bimodal Mixture Model of the Clear-Sky Index [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Improved probability distribution models for power generation are useful e.g. for probabilistic power flow simulations. This paper presents a distribution model for photovoltaic (PV) power generation based on the clear-sky index. With the use of minute-resolution data on global horizontal irradiation (GHI) we fit unimodal normal, bimodal normal and ...

Deriving a clear-sky soil moisture index from ECOSTRESS land surface temperature [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing of Environment
Agricultural drought threatens food and water security in rapidly growing regions like India and Sub-Saharan Africa, underscoring the importance of remote sensing (RS) for monitoring. However, existing land surface temperature (LST)-based water stress indices often lack sensitivity to soil moisture (SM) deficits in vegetated areas, and high-resolution ...

A novel clear-sky index for color sky imagery used in short-term irradiance forecasting

Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2020
A method for mapping color sky images of convective fair-weather cumuli to a scalar irradiance metric is presented. While basic interpretations of irradiance from color sky imagery are sufficient for many irradiance forecasting applications, sky images containing convective fair-weather cumuli can often contain gray-colored regions.

Modeling dependence of solar radiation and sky clearness index using a bivariate copula

Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 2021
The total solar radiation received by a specific region in a day is a significant weather-related parameter for most areas of application. Obtaining correct information from irradiation models reduces uncertainty in solar resource estimations, leading to improvements in solar energy production. This study introduces a copula method to correlate the sky

Analytic Formula for the Clear‐sky UV Index

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2007
AbstractAn approximate formula for the UV Index (UVI) under cloud‐free, unpolluted, low surface albedo conditions is: image where μo is the cosine of the solar zenith angle and Ω is the total vertical ozone column (in Dobson Units, DU). The dependence on μo and Ω is based on a simple physical model of biologically weighted atmospheric transmission in

Probabilistic analysis of Sky clearness index for solar energy systems planning

2018 Smart City Symposium Prague (SCSP), 2018
Proper planning of solar energy systems require accurate knowledge concerning the effective values of irradiation incident on solar system. One of the important parameters that provide information concerning the effective value of irradiation at the ground level is the clearness index, this index being directly related to the attenuation effect of the ...

Analytic model for correlations of cloud induced fluctuations of clear-sky index

Solar Energy, 2017
Abstract We have derived an analytic model to describe the correlation of cloud-induced fluctuations on photovoltaic (PV) system power generation versus distance or time lag in terms of the parameters that describe the clouds (duration, opacity, ramp smoothness and lag). Clouds are modeled as clear-sky index deviations with sigmoidal ramps. The found

Dynamics of Clear Sky Index of Solar Insolation

Volume 3: Advances in Thermal Technologies; Advances in Semiconductor Manufacturing; Clean Energy Technologies & Systems; Cyber Physical Systems + AI / ML
Abstract Understanding the variability of solar energy is essential for optimizing energy resource planning and utilization. This study investigates the clear sky index k (the ratio of actual insolation to ideal clear-sky insolation) using satellite-derived real-sky data (INSAT-3D) and ideal-sky data computed through GRASS GIS, across

Effect of Asynchronous Data Processing on Solar Irradiance and Clearness Index Estimation by Sky Imagery

Applied Solar Energy, 2020
Among the different available technologies to estimate and forecast solar irradiance, total sky imagers are a suitable option for short-term horizons (less than 30 min). For this purpose, cameras are able to capture images at high speed (less than a second), depending on hardware and configuration, while solarimetric measurements are restricted to the ...
