Bayesian Decision Tree for the Classification of the Mode of Motion in Single-Molecule Trajectories [PDF]

open access: yesT\"urkcan, Silvan, and Jean-Baptiste Masson. "Bayesian decision tree for the classification of the mode of motion in single-molecule trajectories." PloS one 8.12 (2013): e82799, 2015
Membrane proteins move in heterogeneous environments with spatially (sometimes temporally) varying friction and with biochemical interactions with various partners. It is important to reliably distinguish different modes of motion to improve our knowledge of the membrane architecture and to understand the nature of interactions between membrane ...

Influence of high gas production during thermophilic anaerobic digestion in pilot-scale and lab-scale reactors on survival of the thermotolerant pathogens Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter jejuni in piggery wastewater [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Safe reuse of animal wastes to capture energy and nutrients, through anaerobic digestion processes, is becoming an increasingly desirable solution to environmental pollution.

The ‘in vivo lifestyle’ of bile acid 7α-dehydroxylating bacteria: comparative genomics, metatranscriptomic, and bile acid metabolomics analysis of a defined microbial community in gnotobiotic mice

open access: yesGut Microbes, 2020
The formation of secondary bile acids by gut microbes is a current topic of considerable biomedical interest. However, a detailed understanding of the biology of anaerobic bacteria in the genus Clostridium that are capable of generating secondary bile ...

In vitro assessment of the relationships between the digestion of different types of rice straw and bacterial community in the rumen

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2023
The aims of this study were to examine bacterial communities in relation to the rumen digestion of rice straw and to understand how concentrate supplements affect gut bacteria involving the digestion of a rice straw-based diet.

Stiffness of the C-terminal disordered linker affects the geometry of the active site in endoglucanase Cel8A [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cellulosomes are complex multi-enzyme machineries which efficiently degrade plant cell-wall polysaccharides. The multiple domains of the cellulosome proteins are often tethered together by intrinsically disordered regions. The properties and functions of these disordered linkers are not well understood. In this work, we study endoglucanase Cel8A, which

Micro‐ and Nano‐Bots for Infection Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review presents a strategic vision for integrating micro‐ and nanobots in the pipeline for infection diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. To develop these robots as a practical solution for infection management, their design principles are clarified based on their propulsion mechanisms and then categorized infection management domains based on ...

Dietary bacteriophages as an alternative for zinc oxide or organic acids to control diarrhoea and improve the performance of weanling piglets

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2017
In this study, the antibacterial substances ZnO, organic acids and a bacteriophage cocktail were added to the diet of weanling pigs to evaluate the effects on gut health.

Identification and Characterisation of Spore-Forming Bacteria in Bovine Raw Milk Collected from Four Dairy Farms in New Zealand

open access: yesDairy, 2023
Contamination of milk and dairy products with pathogenic and spoilage bacteria may result in huge economic loss due to recalls of products. This study aimed to identify spore-forming bacteria from raw milk and characterise those for toxin production and ...

Self‐Adjusting Engineered Probiotic for Targeted Tumor Colonization and Local Therapeutics Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Zou et al. developed an engineered strain of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 with precise targeting abilities for colonization and on‐demand payload release. The engineered probiotic survives and embolizes tumors only in the presence of more than 5 mM L‐lactate. Furthermore, the introduction of an α‐hemolysin circuit enhances its anti‐tumor effect.
